While the Vietnamese market has witnessed an influx of new car models since the beginning of the year, a few vehicles have quietly bid farewell to local customers. The following models have been discontinued by their respective manufacturers, with some officially confirming their departure from the Vietnamese market.
Toyota Yaris
As Hilux made its comeback, Yaris had to make an exit. Toyota Vietnam has confirmed that they are temporarily halting the import of Yaris due to supply and demand dynamics. The Yaris nameplate is no longer featured in their product lineup.
It’s not surprising that Yaris had to exit the market, given its consistently low sales figures. In the first five months of 2024, only eight units of Yaris were sold, paling in comparison to its platform-sharing sibling, Vios, which sold 3,446 units in the same period. Even when compared to another hatchback in the B-segment, the Suzuki Swift, Yaris falls short. The Swift sold 208 units in the first five months, outperforming Yaris.
The Yaris, imported from Thailand, boasts specifications similar to the Vios, with the most notable difference being their distinct styling. However, the Yaris’s price tag of 684 million VND is significantly higher than the Vios, comparable to the price range of today’s B-segment SUVs.
Suzuki Ciaz
The Suzuki Ciaz has also disappeared from the brand’s product lineup in Vietnam. After a brief hiatus and a re-introduction with upgraded features, the Ciaz is once again absent from the market. Suzuki Vietnam has not released an official statement regarding this development.
Similar to the Yaris, the Ciaz sold only eight units in the first five months of 2024, consistently ranking among the lowest-selling cars in the market. Despite its lackluster sales performance, the Ciaz is often offered with significant discounts at dealerships. In late 2023, dealerships offered discounts of up to 120 million VND, along with accessory gifts, bringing the actual price of the Ciaz down to around 415 million VND, much lower than its listed price of 535 million VND.
In Vietnam, the Ciaz is available in a single variant, featuring a 1.4L engine and a 4-speed transmission. Its equipment level is not considered basic when compared to competitors in the same segment. The interior features include a 9-inch Android screen, automatic air conditioning, and push-button start, among others.
Mazda BT-50
The Mazda BT-50 pickup truck has also been discontinued by the brand’s distributor in Vietnam, although no official announcement has been made. According to dealerships, the reason for this discontinuation is the anticipation of an upgraded version of the model in the Thai market.
It is uncertain if and when the BT-50 will make a comeback in Vietnam, as its sales figures pale in comparison to its rivals. In the first five months of 2024, only five units of the BT-50 were sold, while its competitor, the Isuzu D-Max, sold 139 units in the same period. The Ford Ranger continues to dominate the segment, with sales of 6,301 units.
Similar to the Ciaz, the BT-50 also benefited from significant dealership discounts in late 2023. The standard manual transmission variant was offered with a discount of approximately 130 million VND, bringing its starting price down to 529 million VND. This competitive pricing strategy positioned the BT-50 favorably against competitors, all priced above 600 million VND.
The Mazda BT-50 shares its platform and powertrain with the Isuzu D-Max, and their interior designs exhibit some similarities. The BT-50 is offered with a single 1.9L engine option, while its exterior retains the distinctive design language associated with Mazda vehicles.
Affordable Mitsubishi Xforce: Price 620 million, looks like the high-end version, threatening Seltos, Creta
The Mitsubishi Xforce GLX is equipped with features that are suitable for everyday use in urban areas. Priced at 620 million VND, it is comparable to the standard versions of the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta, but it is more affordable compared to the standard versions of the Toyota Yaris Cross or Honda HR-V.
Mazda BT-50 Quietly Discontinued from Sale in Vietnam
Japan pick-up truck, the Mazda BT-50, has quietly left the Vietnamese market in a “no fanfare, no announcement” manner, amidst mounting challenges.
