Two years after Apple’s $50 million settlement over its faulty MacBook butterfly keyboard, the payout is finally reaching affected customers.

An update on the MacBook Keyboard Settlement Administration website states that the court authorized payments to be issued on June 27, 2024, with disbursements to be made to approved claimants by August 2024.
Eligible MacBook owners received emails about the settlement back in December 2022. Those who had at least two qualified bottom case repairs (including the aluminum housing, keyboard, battery, and touch bar) performed by Apple within four years of purchase will receive up to $395. Customers who had one bottom case repair are entitled to up to $125, and those who had their keycaps replaced are eligible for up to $50.
Claims were accepted through March 6, 2023, and the final settlement approval was granted on May 25, 2023. The reason for the delay of over a year in issuing payments to customers is not mentioned.

Apple used the butterfly keyboard mechanism in Macs from 2015 to 2019. While the design was updated multiple times during those four years, the butterfly mechanism remained prone to failure. Thousands of customers experienced issues with key repetition, sticky keys, and complete keyboard failure due to debris, dust, and other factors.
Apple launched a repair program in June 2018, covering MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models produced from 2015 onward, but the program only warranted the machines for four years after purchase. Moreover, since the butterfly keyboard has been replaced, there will be no permanent fix available.
Due to the widespread issues with the butterfly keyboard, Apple transitioned to a scissor-switch mechanism. Macs produced from late 2019 onwards feature the more reliable scissor-switch keyboard, which offers improved durability and resistance to wear and tear.
“I used to think it was foolish to spend extra money on this feature on the iPhone, but once I tried it, I couldn’t stop.”
Previously, I did not value spending extra money to buy the Pro line just to have a 120Hz display. However, after using the iPhone 15 Pro for a few months, this person realized that they were wrong.
