The delegation from the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture, led by Minister Francisco, visited Tan Long Group as part of their working program in Vietnam. This visit was one of several activities during their stay, including observing the 1-million-hectare high-quality, low-emission rice model in the Mekong Delta and circular agricultural economic models, as well as holding talks with the Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development on promoting bilateral cooperation in agriculture, food security, and sustainable development.
Minister Francisco expressed his admiration for Tan Long’s over 20 years of diversified development, especially the scale and technology applied at the Hanh Phuc Rice Factory, during the working session on July 7.
“With an average population growth rate of 1.5%/year (equivalent to an increase of about 1.2 million people/year), the demand for rice will also increase. While the Philippines has been investing in and expanding domestic production, the need for imports, including from Vietnam, remains high. Therefore, we hope to effectively collaborate with Tan Long Group and Vietnam in the future to ensure a stable, long-term supply of high-quality rice,” shared Minister Francisco.
At the meeting, Mr. Truong Sy Ba, Chairman of Tan Long Group, expressed his honor and pride in welcoming Minister Francisco and the high-level delegation to visit the rice milling and processing factory built by Tan Long. He also considered this a great motivation for Tan Long to further contribute to the development of Vietnam’s agriculture sector.
According to Mr. Ba, while Vietnam has significant advantages in agricultural development, there are still challenges regarding logistics, post-harvest drying and processing, high post-harvest losses, and weak links with farmers in production areas. As a result, during peak harvest seasons, freshly harvested rice is often not transported to factories for processing within the “golden time” (8-10 hours after harvest), leading to a decline in the quality and value of the final rice product.
“As a leading rice producer, distributor, and exporter in Vietnam and a participant in the project ‘Sustainable Development of 1 Million Hectares of High-Quality Rice in the Mekong Delta by 2030,’ Tan Long Group focuses on investing in modern infrastructure to overcome post-harvest processing and storage issues, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve rice quality and value.” Mr. Ba added that the Hanh Phuc Rice Factory serves this mission, and they will also emphasize low-emission production measures to international standards to reduce the rice industry’s emissions, enhance Vietnam’s economy’s resilience to economic and climatic impacts, and increase farmers’ incomes.
The delegation was also accompanied by representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, departments and sectors of An Giang province, and the People’s Committee of Tri Ton district. Mr. Ho Thanh Binh, Vice Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang province, highlighted the province’s strengths in agricultural production, especially rice cultivation. The province is promoting the transformation of agricultural production to meet market demands, emphasizing high quality and environmental friendliness. They also expressed their desire to continue receiving the Philippines’ attention and cooperation in the fields of agriculture and agricultural business in the future.
Minister Francisco and the Philippine delegation then concluded their visit to An Giang on July 7 with a tour of the production area at the Hanh Phuc Rice Factory.
