A number of car brands have halted sales of certain models in Vietnam, despite their long-standing presence in the market. This decision comes as a result of sluggish sales and the need to introduce newer, more competitive models to capture the market.
Hatchback: Toyota Yaris
Toyota’s hatchback line-up now only includes the Wigo, as the Yaris has been removed from the brand’s website. Priced at 684 million VND, the Yaris faced stiff competition from the likes of the Mazda 2 Sport and Suzuki Swift, offering better value for money. Additionally, the Yaris was criticized for its poor sound insulation.
Adding to its woes, the Yaris was one of 20 Toyota models implicated in a safety testing scandal involving Daihatsu, a Toyota subsidiary, last year. According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), the Yaris sold only 8 units in the first five months of this year.
Sedan: Suzuki Ciaz
Suzuki has also discontinued the Ciaz sedan, removing it from their website. Priced at 534 million VND, the Ciaz faced an uphill battle against competitors like the Toyota Vios and Honda City. In May 2024, only 3 units were sold, and a meager 8 units for the year so far. The brand has confirmed that imports of this model have been halted since May 2024.
Pickup Truck: Mazda BT-50
Mazda’s website no longer features the BT-50 pickup truck, which has been on the Vietnamese market since 2011. Despite competitive pricing, sales have been slow. In the first quarter of 2024, only 5 units were sold, and VAMA has not provided sales data for subsequent months.
SUV: Nissan X-Trail
Nissan Vietnam has also discontinued several models, including the Sunny, Teana, and X-Trail, which are no longer available on their website or through dealerships. Currently, only the Kicks E-Power, Almera, and Navara models are listed on their website, with the Terra expected to launch in the second quarter of 2024.
Car Market During Lunar New Year: Abundant Supply, Decreased Demand
Entering into the beginning of February 2024, the Vietnam automobile market has witnessed contrasting fluctuations compared to the previous period. Firstly, we must mention the policy of reducing 50% of the registration fee for domestically assembled vehicles, which officially expired after December 31, 2023. To seize the opportunity provided by this policy, a large number of users took advantage of buying before the state’s incentives came to an end.
