Realizing the Aspiration of “Opening the Skies, Taking Flight”

The construction project of Quang Tri Airport (CHK) has been approved by the Prime Minister of Vietnam, with a vision to be realized through a public-private partnership (PPP).

The goal of this project is to meet the ever-increasing demand for air transportation, boosting political, economic, and social development. It also ensures high mobility in defense, rescue, and relief work, thus safeguarding the national security of Central Vietnam, with a particular focus on Quang Tri province. The plan aligns with the transport sector’s master plan and development orientation.

Located in the communes of Gio Quang, Gio Hai, and Gio Mai in Gio Linh district, the CHK Quang Tri project spans over 265 hectares and boasts a total investment of more than VND 5,800 billion. It is designed to meet the standards of a 4C-grade civil airport (as per ICAO’s coding system) and a military airport of grade II. The airport will be capable of accommodating Code E aircraft, serving up to 5 million passengers and 25,500 tons of cargo annually.

With a projected timeline of 50 years, the project includes 24 months for preparation and construction, followed by 47 years and 2 months for operation and capital recovery. The airport is expected to be operational by July 2026.

In late December 2023, the Quang Tri provincial government awarded the investment decision and business registration certificate to the T&T Group and CIENCO4 Corporation joint venture, marking a significant milestone.

Notably, CHK Quang Tri is only the second airport project in Vietnam to be developed through a PPP model, following Van Don Airport in Quang Ninh province.

According to Mr. Vo Van Hung, Chairman of the Quang Tri People’s Committee, the planning and construction of CHK Quang Tri hold more than just commercial and transportation value. It symbolizes peace, cooperation, and integration, serving as a catalyst for the rapid and sustainable development of the heroic land of Quang Tri.

“Today’s groundbreaking ceremony for CHK Quang Tri lays the foundation for a not-so-distant future when, in 2026, Airbus and Boeing aircraft will take flight in the skies over Quang Tri province, symbolizing peace and progress,” affirmed Mr. Vo Van Hung.

A Tribute to the Heroic Land: Continuing the Legacy

Quang Tri occupies a pivotal economic and political position, serving as the intersection of the North-South and East-West economic corridors. It enjoys convenient transportation links, including vital national routes and the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC)—the shortest trans-Asian route connecting Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos to Central Vietnam and the wider ASEAN region via the Lao Bao international border gate.

Quang Tri Airport is slated to commence operations in July 2026

Notably, Quang Tri is part of the dynamic tourism development area encompassing Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Nam. It boasts exceptional tourism potential with its lengthy coastline, numerous scenic spots, and significant national historical sites. These include the National Martyrs’ Cemeteries in Truong Son and Road 9, the Special National Relic of Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, and the Special National Relic of Hien Luong – Ben Hai.

With a surge in spiritual and heritage tourism, it is anticipated that there will be an influx of visitors from across Vietnam eager to revisit the former battlefield, explore historical sites, and enjoy the province’s leisure offerings.

Quang Tri has been experiencing rapid and sustainable growth. In addition to the Southeast Economic Zone, the province is also home to two international border gates and is strategically located along National Highway 9, which connects to the East-West Economic Corridor. With a vision to become the center of renewable energy in Central Vietnam and the country by 2030, Quang Tri has already attracted significant investment in the energy sector.

The inauguration of CHK Quang Tri will contribute to “opening the skies,” stimulating tourism, facilitating cargo transportation and logistics, and supporting the development of industrial parks, economic zones, and commercial services. It will also enhance national defense and security, aid in rescue and relief operations, and serve as a pivotal piece of transportation infrastructure, attracting domestic and international businesses to the region.

CHK Quang Tri will seamlessly integrate with the existing and planned transportation network, including projects like the Cam Lo-La Son expressway, National Highway 15D, the trans-Asian road connecting Laos and Thailand, the coastal road linking the East-West Economic Corridor, the Lao Bao-Cam Lo expressway, the My Thuy deep-water port, and the My Thuy-Dong Ha-Lao Bao railway.

CHK Quang Tri Artist’s Impression

The project holds special significance as it fulfills the long-cherished aspiration of the people of Quang Tri to shorten the North-South journey and facilitate easier access for families of those who fought and sacrificed their lives on this land. It will also provide a more convenient gateway for international friends wishing to visit and pay tribute to this heroic province.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long expressed his confidence that with the strong determination of the Party Committee, authorities, and people of Quang Tri province, along with the effective support of the Central Government and relevant ministries and sectors, and the commitment of the T&T – CIENCO4 joint venture, the skies over Quang Tri will witness the takeoff of flights carrying the aspirations and dreams of its people by 2026.

Mr. Do Quang Hien, Founder and Chairman of the Strategy Committee of T&T Group, affirmed the Group’s deep connection and dedication to the land of Quang Tri.

T&T Group pledges to mobilize all available resources to ensure the timely completion of CHK Quang Tri, transforming it into a driving force for local economic development and a bridge connecting the people of Vietnam to the sacred land of Quang Tri. Alongside other large-scale projects in energy, infrastructure, and real estate, T&T Group is committed to accompanying Quang Tri in its journey towards becoming one of the country’s leading provinces by 2030, as envisioned in the provincial master plan approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1737/QD-TTg dated December 29, 2023.
