A Review of Vietnam’s Game Show Market
In 2023, Vietnam’s game show market began to show signs of “revival” after the COVID-19 pandemic, but there weren’t many impressive programs, and some even left big blunders.
Some reality shows for models, such as The Face Vietnam and The New Mentor 2023, caused controversy throughout their airing and even after their conclusion. Viewers couldn’t focus on the contestants due to the judges’ verbal sparring and drama.
The imbalance between quality and commercialism led to a loss of trust from viewers, and it also significantly impacted the public’s perception of modeling-centric shows.
Even programs that had made a splash in previous seasons, like The One That Is, Masked Singer, and Rap Vietnam , saw a decline in their appeal and sparked debates. For instance, the host of The One That Is made a mistake regarding knowledge, and Hieuthuhai had her clothes removed during 2 Days 1 Night …
It wasn’t until the end of 2023 that The Beauty Breaks Through the Waves , a show adapted from a foreign format, brought a fresh breeze to the Vietnamese game show market. From there, the race among entertainment “tycoons” has been intensifying, with each player showcasing their grand ambitions and employing various formats.
The Explosive Race Among the “Big Boys”
Entering July, production houses Madison and CJ ENM introduced Street Dance Divas (original title: Street Woman Fighter), featuring celebrities like Hari Won, Diep Lam Anh, and Gil Le.
It’s not just dating and singing shows that are in focus; culinary-themed programs are also getting their moment. BHD’s Let’s Feast Vietnam – The Amazing Journey created a positive impact after its first season and is now back for a second round with guests like Miss Vietnam Small Planet 2018, Miss Vietnam 2018, and Lynk Lee…
After The New Mentor, Duc Si Tien is incubating several new projects. In 2024, he launched The Next Gentleman – The Perfect Gentleman , a reality show for Miss Universe Vietnam contestants, and is also preparing for the second season of The New Mentor.
A multitude of new game shows with diverse themes, ranging from singing and dating to culinary and shopping, are flooding television screens.
The biggest player in the game show production arena in recent years has been Dat Viet Corporation, with hits like 2 Days 1 Night, Rap Vietnam, Masked Singer, and The One That Is … These shows have garnered millions of views per episode, distributed through the company’s media platforms.
Demonstrating its expanding media power, Dat Viet’s Hey Bro took social media by storm. The show led social media interactions from June 24-30, with over 12.4 million interactions and a 64% positive sentiment rate.
Coming up, they’re bringing back Rap Vietnam for a fourth season. Initially, the show was supposed to end after three seasons due to a lack of young rappers casting. In the latter half of the year, the corporation has several more hotly anticipated show projects lined up, including The Glittering Journey and Masked Singer, which are expected to continue receiving immense attention from viewers.
Going head-to-head with Dat Viet is Yeah1, the creator of the viral show Hey Bro, Overcoming Challenges. They’ve acquired the rights to the Chinese show Call Me by Fire from Mango TV. Exceeding initial expectations, the show featuring 33 talented individuals is winning over the audience and receiving positive feedback.

Following the completion of the show for the talented 33, Yeah1 announced the second season of their other project, The Beauty Breaks Through the Waves. It is slated to air at the end of 2024. In June, actress Bao Thanh revealed that she had to decline an invitation to join the second season of The Beauty Breaks Through the Waves due to her busy schedule.
Competing in the media arena, each episode of these two “bro” shows, along with the new reality show Paradise Island by Cat Tien Sa in collaboration with JTBC from South Korea, climbed to the top of YouTube’s trending list, with skyrocketing search volume and interactions across social media platforms.
The onslaught of entertainment shows, backed by these industry giants, has made Saturday night television more vibrant than ever. While it’s too early to assess their effectiveness, the competition for media attention and ratings in the coming weeks will undoubtedly be fierce.
