Hanoi police are investigating a fraud case involving online stock investment, with losses amounting to nearly VND 11 billion.
The victim, Ms. P., a resident of Dong Anh district, Hanoi, received a call from someone claiming to be an employee of Alliance Berstein Investment Management Company. They offered free training on stock market knowledge and invited her to join an online study group on Zalo.
After two weeks of online classes, Ms. P. was instructed to download the Alliance Berstein Investment Management app to practice stock investing. Enticed by the high returns, she invested over VND 6 billion.
When she tried to withdraw her money, Ms. P. was informed that her account had been locked and that she had to pay additional fees to unlock it. Out of fear of losing her investment, she made 21 transfers totaling VND 10.9 billion to the scammers, only to have her entire balance stolen.
Similarly, Mr. H. from Bac Tu Liem district and Ms. D. from Hai Ba Trung district, both in Hanoi, fell victim to the same scam, losing VND 1.1 billion collectively after investing in the fraudulent Alliance Berstein fund.
In recent times, Hanoi police have repeatedly warned about fraudulent schemes involving online financial investment applications. However, new investment funds with suspicious operations continue to emerge, luring unsuspecting investors with attractive offers.
To protect yourself from such scams, the Hanoi Police Department’s Division of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention advises the public to be cautious when joining free stock and financial investment education groups or accepting friend requests from strangers on social media.
Refrain from using online investment applications or international trading platforms that promise high returns, as they often carry a high risk of fraud. By being vigilant and reporting any suspicious activities to the authorities, you can safeguard your finances and avoid falling prey to financial scams.
If you encounter any signs of fraud, it is crucial to contact the police immediately to resolve the matter according to legal procedures.
