The Heart of Hanoi: Revitalizing the City’s Lakes and Gardens A bold new vision is set to transform the central lakes and gardens of Hanoi. With a focus on pedestrianization, natural beauty, and significant investment, these spaces will undergo a remarkable rebirth.

The Ba Dinh District underwent a transformation with a nearly 30 billion VND investment to redevelop Ho Ngoc Khanh into a pedestrian-friendly space. The district also enhanced and upgraded the Truc Bach flower garden, planting additional rows of bamboo to create a serene and aesthetic environment. With a population of over 8.5 million people in 2023, Hanoi is Vietnam’s second most populous city, after Ho Chi Minh City. The large population has led to a corresponding increase in the demand for recreational spaces. As a result, the city has developed numerous public recreational areas and embarked on the improvement and upgrade of existing facilities.

A notable example is the recent approval by the Ba Dinh District in Hanoi of an infrastructure improvement and urban beautification project. This project, with an investment of nearly VND 30 billion from the district budget, includes the development of a walking and business service street around Ho Ngoc Khanh Lake and its vicinity on Pham Huy Thong Street, in Ngoc Khanh Ward.

The project is expected to be completed and operational before October 10, 2024, serving as a commemorative project for the 70th anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2024). Ho Ngoc Khanh Lake is a popular spot for walking, exercising, and leisure activities among locals, with many eateries and businesses in the surrounding area.

The infrastructure improvement project aims to enhance the urban aesthetic and create additional streets with services catering to the recreational needs of the residents. The aerial perspective showcases the envisioned walking street along Ho Ngoc Khanh Lake.

Additionally, the Ba Dinh District is also undertaking a project to upgrade and improve the Truc Bach Flower Garden, located next to the Trúc Bạch Ward Health Station.

The Truc Bach Flower Garden will feature newly planted bamboo groves, enhanced urban landscaping, and expanded walking paths. It will serve as a venue for cultural promotion and culinary introduction, among other activities.

Furthermore, the People’s Committee of Ba Dinh District plans to invest in a road connecting Tran Vu and Truc Bach Streets, improving traffic flow around the lake and enhancing convenience for locals.

Currently, the Truc Bach Flower Garden is a popular recreational spot for locals, featuring exercise equipment and various amenities for children.

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation, the Hai Ba Trung District has also embarked on a project to upgrade the area around Ho Thien Quang Lake. With a total investment of over VND 109 billion, the project is being developed by the Hai Ba Trung District Investment and Construction Project Management Board.

The plan for the area surrounding Ho Thien Quang Lake includes the construction of five squares: a central square and four seasonal squares named after the seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter (depicted in the perspective illustration).

Currently, the area around Ho Thien Quang Lake is undergoing simultaneous construction, with efforts to accelerate the project’s progress.

The locations of the three lakes and flower gardens that will undergo upgrades, improvements, and beautification are indicated in the map.
