In the first half of 2024, Cambodia’s agricultural exports reached $2.8 billion.

In the same period, Vietnam’s agricultural exports hit $18.37 billion.

According to a report by the Khmer Times (Cambodia), citing data from the country’s General Directorate of Agriculture, Cambodia exported over 6.13 million tons of agricultural products in the first six months of 2024, a 57% increase compared to the same period in 2023, earning over $2.8 billion.

The report also revealed that agricultural exports in the first half of the year surged by more than 2.23 million tons. The agricultural products that witnessed export growth include milled rice, paddy, fresh cassava, cassava starch, cashew nuts, corn, fresh longan, fresh mangoes, and peppercorns.

These products were exported to 80 countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, China, and South Korea.

“More than 3.86 million tons of exported agricultural products were non-rice items, earning over $2.1 billion,” the report stated, adding that exports of milled rice accounted for 330,000 tons, while paddy exports exceeded 1.92 million tons.

Cambodia’s agricultural exports saw a positive increase in the first half of 2024.

The report also highlighted that during this period, exports of milled rice increased by 2.74%, paddy by 57.28%, cassava starch by over 100%, cashew nuts by over 50%, and corn by 250%, while dried cassava chips decreased by 8% and fresh bananas by 22%.

Fresh mango exports surged by over 100%, dried mango by 38%, fresh longan by over 120%, and peppercorns by over 117%, while other agricultural products declined by 13%.

Lun Yeng, Secretary-General of the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF), told the Khmer Times that milled rice and paddy exports did not increase as expected due to container transportation issues.

The Cambodian government has waived additional taxes on agricultural products, including rice, corn, beans, peppercorns, cashew nuts, cassava, and rubber, for both the domestic market and exports.

Vietnam’s Agricultural Exports Reach $18.37 Billion in the First Half of 2024

According to a report by Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, with the recovery of the global market and increasing export orders, trade activities in the first half of 2024 continued to thrive, achieving positive results. Total import and export turnover is estimated at $368.53 billion, a 15.7% increase compared to the same period last year, with exports rising by 14.5% and imports by 17%. The trade balance recorded a surplus of $11.63 billion.

Among the various sectors, agricultural products maintained their growth momentum from 2023. Total export turnover of this sector in the first six months of 2024 is estimated at $18.37 billion, a 19.9% increase compared to the same period in 2023, accounting for 9.67% of the country’s total export turnover.

Vietnam’s agricultural exports reached an estimated $18.37 billion in the first half of 2024.

Due to rising export prices, most commodities in this sector achieved double-digit growth rates compared to the same period last year, including: coffee, with a 34.5% increase in export value despite a 10.6% decrease in volume; rice, which increased by only 10.4% in volume but saw a significant 32% rise in export value; tea, with a 32.1% increase; vegetables and fruits, up by 28.2%; cashew nuts, up by 17.4%; peppercorns, which decreased by 6.8% in volume but rose by 30.9% in export value; and cassava and cassava products, which saw a 5.9% increase in export value despite a 7.7% drop in volume.

Thus, both Cambodia and Vietnam witnessed notable increases in their agricultural sectors during the first half of 2024, with positive growth in rice, cashew nuts, vegetables, and fruits, among other products.
