“Vietnam: The Next Global Logistics Hub?”

On the afternoon of July 9th, at the Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Mr. Turgut Erkeskin, President of the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA), who was on an official visit to Vietnam.

Welcoming the FIATA President to Vietnam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh appreciated FIATA’s support for the Vietnam Logistics Services Enterprise Association in hosting the FIATA World Congress in 2025.

The Prime Minister informed that Vietnam’s logistics sector has been growing at an average annual rate of 14-16%, significantly contributing to the country’s impressive trade figures, with total import and export turnover reaching nearly USD 700 billion in 2023. In the first six months of 2024, the estimated trade turnover reached USD 370 billion, a 15.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023, with a trade surplus of USD 11.63 billion. As an open economy, Vietnam recognizes the crucial role of logistics in its economic development, aligning with global trends.

Expressing gratitude to FIATA for its role in fostering cooperation between the Vietnam Logistics Services Enterprise Association, Vietnamese logistics enterprises, and their global counterparts, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh acknowledged FIATA’s contributions to the development of Vietnam’s logistics sector.

Sharing Vietnam’s ongoing efforts in formulating the Vietnam Logistics Services Development Strategy for the period of 2025-2035, with a vision towards 2045, the Prime Minister requested FIATA’s insights, advice, and support in the areas of digital transformation and green transition. He emphasized the need for solutions to develop agricultural and industrial logistics, enhance Vietnam’s maritime fleet, establish trade and transport economic corridors, and provide technical assistance to finalize the National Strategy on Logistics Services Development in 2024.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister stated that the Vietnamese government plans to establish a steering agency for logistics services with a competent and authorized professional apparatus to lead the development and promotion of this crucial sector. He also sought FIATA’s support in human resource development for Vietnam’s logistics sector and encouraged the expansion of training programs to enhance the capabilities of Vietnamese enterprises.

The Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam is focusing on developing strategic infrastructure, including logistics infrastructure, and investing in high-quality human resources. He assured that the government would accompany domestic and foreign partners, offering support and creating favorable conditions for economic, investment, trade, and service cooperation, with a particular emphasis on collaborative development in the logistics sector for mutual benefit.

Thanking the Prime Minister for his time, the President of the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations, Turgut Erkeskin, highlighted the significance of logistics amid current challenges. He expressed his confidence in the Vietnamese government and ministries’ support and active participation in ensuring the success of the FIATA World Congress in 2025 in Hanoi.
