In the first half of 2024, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) reported a stable and safe power supply, meeting the socio-economic development and people’s daily needs, despite the continuously rising electricity demand.

The total electricity production and import of the system in the first six months of 2024 reached 151.74 billion kWh, a 12.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Notably, the highest power demand and consumption in the first half of the year occurred in June 2024. Specifically, the highest daily electricity consumption (June 14, 2024) reached 1.02 billion kWh, and the highest capacity reached 49,533 MW (June 19, 2024), representing an increase of 11.05% and 7.87%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2023.

In the first six months of 2024, the transmitted electricity output reached 121.47 billion kWh, a 13.1% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The capacity and output of electricity transmitted from Central and Southern regions to the North were consistently maintained at high levels to enhance the power supply to the Northern region.

The total commercial electricity output of the Group in the first six months of 2024 reached 135.64 billion kWh, a 14.3% increase compared to the same period. This includes a 16.07% increase in electricity for daily life, a 12.8% increase for industry and construction, a 16.58% increase for commerce and services, and a 14.02% increase for agriculture.

Regarding investment and construction, EVN reported positive results in the first half of 2024, with a 35% increase in investment volume compared to the same period in 2023. The key power source projects under construction are on track with the 2024 plan. For the Ialy Hydropower Expansion project, several construction items are ahead of schedule, with two turbine units expected to be operational by the end of 2024. The solar power projects, Phuoc Thai 2 and 3, are also striving to complete construction and begin operations in the third quarter of 2024.

Construction of the 500 kV Line for the 3rd Circuit, Quang Trach – Pho Noi.

In terms of the power grid, EVN and its units started construction on 47 works and completed the electrification and operation of 57 power grid works from 110 kV to 500 kV in the first half of 2024.

Particularly for the 500 kV Line for the 3rd Circuit, Quang Trach – Pho Noi, EVN and its units have exerted their utmost efforts to meet the progress directed by the Prime Minister. Important component projects have been energized, including the 500kV Thanh Hoa Transformer Station, the 500kV Nam Dinh 1 – Thanh Hoa Line, and two items for expanding the busbar and installing 500kV reactors at the 500kV Pho Noi Transformer Station and the 500kV Quang Trach Thermal Power Plant’s busyard. EVN continues to direct the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) and other units to mobilize all forces to complete the remaining construction and finalize technical inspection and acceptance procedures.

In addition to the 500 kV Line for the 3rd Circuit, EVN and its units have energized and put into operation the 220kV Nha Trang – Thap Cham Line (2 circuits) and the 220kV Vinh Hao, Vinh Chau, and Pho Cao Transformer Stations. They have also completed the capacity upgrade of the 220kV Thai Thuy Transformer Station.

Regarding the power supply situation in July 2024, EVN forecasts a maximum capacity of over 52,000 MW for the entire system, with the North possibly reaching over 27,000 MW. The average daily electricity consumption of the whole system is expected to be around 920.5 million kWh/day, a 10.15% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

To proactively ensure a stable, safe, and reliable power supply for the National Power System, EVN directs all units to continue strictly implementing Official Dispatch No. 38/CD-TTg dated April 15, 2024, and the directions of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Committee for Management of State Capital at Enterprises.

This includes closely monitoring meteorological and hydrological developments, fuel conditions, machine availability, and load growth to promptly update and adjust the operating mode accordingly. Ensuring the stable, safe, and reliable operation of the system, optimizing power generation sources, and maximizing transmission from the Central to the Northern regions are key focuses.

In terms of investment and construction in July 2024, EVN continues to urge units to concentrate forces at construction sites and accelerate the progress of key power source and grid projects.

This involves focusing all resources and coordinating with relevant parties to complete the remaining works and the entire project of the 500 kV Line for the 3rd Circuit (from Quang Trach to Pho Noi) as directed by the Prime Minister.

For the ongoing power grid construction projects that serve power source connection, hydropower release, and power import, EVN will work closely with local authorities to resolve issues related to land compensation and clearance while also urging contractors to expedite progress.

Simultaneously, EVN will expedite the preparation process to commence the project of supplying electricity from the national grid to Con Dao district in 2024.

To ensure power supply for economic development and people’s lives in all situations, EVN greatly appreciates the continued support and positive coordination of the people and electricity customers. This includes the efficient use of electricity, especially during peak hours from 11:00 to 15:00 and from 19:00 to 23:00.

Particularly, it is important to use air conditioners reasonably, turning them on only when necessary and setting the temperature at 26-27°C or higher. Additionally, avoid using multiple high-power electrical appliances simultaneously during peak hours. Practicing energy conservation also reduces the risk of power incidents and helps prevent high electricity bills.
