Fishermen in Quang Hung, Quang Trach district, have been enjoying a bountiful harvest of squid in the sheltered waters of Hon La Bay in recent days. Mr. Vo Cong Nguyen shared that his boat has been catching between 20-50kg of squid each night, with wholesale prices ranging from 120,000 to 400,000 VND per kg, earning his crew over 10 million VND nightly.

Mr. Nguyen explained that squid fishing boats in Hon La Bay are typically small, with crews of 4-7 people. They venture about 10 nautical miles from the shore, leaving the harbor around 2-3 pm each day and returning at 5 am the next morning after fishing through the night.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Dung, another local fisherman, echoed similar sentiments, stating that squid has been abundant in the bay for the past week. On average, each boat catches around 50kg of squid per night, with some hauls exceeding 100kg. With low operating costs of about 2 million VND per trip and high returns, the fishermen are thrilled with their profits.

The fishermen primarily use a combination of powerful lights to attract squid to their boats and then employ hooks with artificial lures consisting of multiple sharp blades to catch the squid. Alternatively, they use modern fish-finding equipment to detect schools of squid and then deploy large nets to capture them. Each net deployment can yield tens of kilograms of squid and fish.
