Dong Nai’s Department of Transportation has proposed to the Ministry of Transport an investment plan to construct two vital intersections: Vung Tau intersection (where National Highway 51 meets National Highway 1) and Gate 11 (where Vo Nguyen Giap, National Highway 51, and Bui Van Hoa intersect). This move aims to address the issue of traffic congestion in these areas, which are key transportation hubs in Bien Hoa City with a high volume of vehicles passing through.

National Highway 51 in Dong Nai Province is severely overloaded.

According to the Dong Nai Department of Transportation, the roads connecting Dong Nai Province with neighboring provinces such as Binh Duong, Long An, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, and Ho Chi Minh City via bridges like Hoa An, Dong Nai, and Long Thanh, as well as National Highway 51, are all experiencing heavy congestion due to the rapid development of the Southeast region. The transportation infrastructure linking to Long Thanh Airport, including the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, National Highway 51, National Highway 1, and National Highway 20, is particularly limited and already congested in several sections.

The Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, nearly 56 kilometers long, with over 42 kilometers passing through Dong Nai Province, connects An Phu intersection to Dau Giay intersection. With four lanes for motor vehicles and two emergency stop lanes, this expressway borders the northern area of Long Thanh Airport. Despite being operational since 2015, the section from the National Highway 51 intersection to the beginning of the expressway now experiences heavy traffic and has reached its capacity, averaging 85,982 PCU per day and night.

National Highway 51 also faces significant traffic, with a vehicle count of 71,035 PCU per day and night in the Long Phuoc-Long Thanh section, and several sections have already reached their capacity. As a result, traffic jams frequently occur on both the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway and National Highway 51.

On August 4, a representative from the Dong Nai Department of Transportation told Tien Phong that several projects are underway to address the regional connectivity issue, including the Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway, Ho Chi Minh City’s Ring Road 3, and Cat Lai Bridge.

However, to meet the passenger transportation demands of the Long Thanh Airport starting in 2026, it is crucial to prioritize the expansion of roads and sections as per the master plan. This includes widening the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway and constructing the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway while ensuring timely progress. Improving these key intersections is of utmost importance.

Investing in and upgrading the Vung Tau and Gate 11 intersections is considered urgent. The estimated investment for the Vung Tau intersection is over VND 4,700 billion, while the Gate 11 intersection is projected to cost more than VND 8,400 billion.
