On August 5, 2024, with the approval of the President of Costa Rica, Mr. Rodrigo Chaves, the Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica, Manuel Tovar, directly informed and handed over a diplomatic note recognizing Vietnam as a market economy country at the headquarters of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Thus, Costa Rica has become the 73rd country to recognize Vietnam’s market economy status.

Costa Rica is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which comprises the world’s 38 most developed market economy countries.

Costa Rica’s legal framework includes provisions on investigations and the application of trade remedies. As of December 31, 2023, according to WTO statistics, Costa Rica had initiated 12 anti-dumping investigations against imports from countries such as Brazil, Chile, Mexico, the United States, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Venezuela, and Guatemala.

The recognition of Vietnam as a market economy country by the Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Trade in anti-dumping and countervailing investigations is a positive move as we are requesting certain trading partners to recognize Vietnam’s market economy status.

At the working session, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien applauded Costa Rica’s diplomatic note recognizing Vietnam as a market economy country in anti-dumping and countervailing investigations.

Costa Rica’s recognition of Vietnam as a market economy country reflects the actual achievements Vietnam has made in its development and integration into the global economy. It will also contribute to fostering the economic and trade relations between the two countries.
