“A Surge in Power Production: Coal-Fired Plants Lead the Way”

In the first seven months of 2024, the total electricity production across the system reached 179.44 billion kWh, reflecting an impressive 11.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This growth is attributed to a diverse energy mix, with coal-fired power contributing 96.4 billion kWh (53.7%), hydropower accounting for 40.9 billion kWh (22.8%), and renewable energy sources shining at 24.02 billion kWh (13.4%).

In the first seven months of 2024, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) has successfully ensured a stable and safe power supply, meeting the socio-economic development and people’s daily needs. This is a remarkable achievement, given the continuously rising electricity demand and the challenges posed by storms, tropical depressions, and severe flooding in the northern mountainous regions, which affected both power supply and power grid infrastructure.

Specifically, in July 2024, the total electricity output of the system reached 27.7 billion kWh, a 6.9% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The highest daily electricity consumption was recorded on July 9, reaching 964.3 million kWh, with a peak capacity of 46,298 MW.

Cumulative electricity production for the first seven months of 2024 reached 179.44 billion kWh, an 11.5% increase year-on-year. The breakdown of this production includes: hydropower at 40.9 billion kWh (22.8%), coal-fired thermal power at 96.4 billion kWh (53.7%), gas turbine power at 14.65 billion kWh (8.2%), and renewable energy sources at 24.02 billion kWh (13.4%, including 16 billion kWh from solar and 7.3 billion kWh from wind power). Electricity imports contributed 3.07 billion kWh (1.7%) to the total.

In the first seven months of 2024, renewable energy sources contributed 24.02 billion kWh, accounting for 13.4% of the total electricity production.

Estimated electricity transmission in July 2024 reached 22.43 billion kWh, an increase of 8.3% compared to the same period last year. The cumulative estimate for the first seven months of 2024 is 121.99 billion kWh, representing a 12.7% year-on-year increase.

During the same period, EVN’s total commercial electricity output reached 160.41 billion kWh, a significant increase of 13.52% year-on-year. This growth is evident across various sectors, with a 14.7% increase in electricity for daily life, a 12.4% rise in electricity for industry and construction, a 15.3% surge in electricity for commerce and services, and a 13.9% jump in electricity for agriculture.

Currently, 95.59% of EVN’s customers have adopted cashless electricity bill payments, and an impressive 99.01% of electricity bills are being paid through cashless methods.

Regarding investment and construction, EVN successfully installed the rotor for the first turbine of the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project. In the first seven months of 2024, EVN and its units commenced construction on 55 projects and completed 62 power grid projects ranging from 110 kV to 500 kV.

Notably, EVN, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), and other units are focusing on completing the remaining works of the 500 kV power line, the third branch of the Quang Trach – Pho Noi project.

Additionally, power grid projects importing electricity from Laos, such as the 500kV Monsoon – Thanh My and Nam Sum – Nong Cong power lines and the 220kV Dak Ooc substation, are also being prioritized. These projects, along with other key initiatives, are crucial for ensuring power supply in 2024 and beyond.

Regarding electricity production and supply in August 2024, EVN, in collaboration with the National Load Dispatch Center (NLDC), will closely monitor meteorological and hydrological conditions, fuel availability, generator availability, and load growth. This real-time data will enable them to adjust the operating mode accordingly, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the power system while also meeting the economic objectives of the power system and water storage targets for the end of 2024 to prepare for power supply in 2025.

In terms of investment and construction in August 2024, EVN will continue to urge units to concentrate their resources on critical projects, accelerating the progress of key power source and grid projects. These include the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project, the Phuoc Thai 2&3 Solar Power Project, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project, the Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Project, the 500 kV power line (from Quang Trach to Pho Noi), and various power grid projects facilitating power source connection, hydropower release, power import, and power supply to Con Dao Island, among others.

To ensure an uninterrupted power supply for economic development and people’s livelihoods in all circumstances, EVN seeks the continued support and positive cooperation of its customers and the public. This includes a strong emphasis on energy conservation, especially during peak hours from 11:00 to 15:00 in the afternoon and from 19:00 to 23:00 in the evening. It is recommended to use air conditioning judiciously, turning it on only when necessary and setting the temperature to 26-27°C or higher. Additionally, avoid using multiple high-power appliances simultaneously during peak hours.
