On August 7, 2024, in Hanoi, the Livestock Department, in collaboration with Informa Markets Group, held a press conference to introduce Vietstock 2024. Mr. Duong Tat Thang, Director of the Livestock Department, shared that livestock farming currently accounts for more than a quarter of the total output of Vietnam’s agriculture sector. Vietnamese livestock farming has made remarkable strides in the context of technological advancements and international integration. The total output of the livestock industry in 2023 increased by 6.38% compared to 2022.
Vietstock 2024 will be held concurrently with Aquaculture Vietnam 2024 from October 9 to 11 at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC) in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City. Marking the 20th anniversary of Vietstock in Vietnam, this year’s theme is “Transforming Livestock Farming for Higher Productivity, Better Nutrition, Greener Environment, and Better Lives.” It is the largest exhibition ever held for the livestock industry.
REFINING THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY’S REGULATORY FRAMEWORK
Over the past three years, Vietnam has consistently maintained its fifth position in the world in terms of pig population and sixth in terms of output. It supplies approximately 4.5 million tons of pork annually. The country also ranks among the top poultry farming nations, with the second-largest waterfowl population globally. Poultry farming provides 2.3 million tons of meat and 19.2 billion eggs. Vietnam is currently the fourth-largest producer of raw milk in the ASEAN region, and it ranks first in Southeast Asia and twelfth worldwide for industrial animal feed production.
Not only do these farming sectors meet domestic demands, but Vietnamese livestock products are also exported, with a total export value of US$515 million in 2023, a 26.2% increase compared to 2022. An increasing range of livestock products are being exported, including honey, suckling pigs, bird’s nests, salted duck eggs, and processed chicken meat and dairy products. Notably, Vietnam is the largest exporter of honey to the United States market.
Mr. Thang shared that in the first months of 2024, the Prime Minister signed a decision to approve five priority projects to implement the Livestock Development Strategy. On the first day of August 2024, the government issued Decree No. 106/2024/ND-CP on policies to support and improve the efficiency of livestock farming. Additionally, nine provisions on land for livestock farming were incorporated into the Land Law 2024 (effective from August 1, 2024), providing a significant supplement to the industry’s production resources.
“The resources from the five priority projects to implement the livestock strategy, the supportive policies, and the production resources in the form of land are now ready. This is the opportune moment and a golden opportunity to transform the industry towards more sustainable development.”
Mr. Duong Tat Thang, Director of the Livestock Department.
Mr. Thang affirmed, “At this point, the livestock industry has a relatively complete, consistent, and internationally integrated regulatory framework, with clear development strategies and orientations.”
However, the Vietnamese livestock industry still faces several challenges and difficulties. These include animal diseases, climate change, market fluctuations, reliance on imported animal feed ingredients, antibiotic resistance, and environmental management issues, all of which pose urgent problems that the industry needs to address.
Therefore, to achieve sustainable development in the livestock industry, it is essential to consider four aspects: economic efficiency, social equity, environmental protection, and animal welfare.
The Vietstock 2024 exhibition is organized by the Livestock Department in collaboration with Informa Markets Group (represented by SES Vietnam Exhibition Services Co., Ltd.) and is expected to take place from October 9 to 11, 2024, at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC) in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City.
“The organizers have also prepared two large conference halls with a capacity of 250 delegates each and four dedicated meeting rooms for workshops, forums, seminars, and dialogues. We anticipate the participation of over 80 local and international speakers at this exhibition,” said Mr. Thang.
