Homestay Guest’s Privacy Violated by Hidden Cameras: A Disturbing Incident in Vung Tau, Vietnam

On August 7th, Ms. K.V., the manager of an apartment at The Song project in Vung Tau, spoke to reporters from Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper about the distress she felt as her messages and photos were shared on social media, attracting negative comments. Ms. K.V. clarified that she was not the apartment owner but a service provider, and that the apartment only occasionally hosted guests, usually on weekends.

Social media user L.L. posted about receiving an apology from the host and manager of this apartment.

According to Ms. K.V., the guests had booked the apartment through another sales representative, who then connected them with her for their stay on August 2. The guests discovered the cameras and removed them, informing the initial sales contact. The apartment owner requested that Ms. K.V. compensate for 50% of the camera cost, as the guests had damaged them during removal, leading to their exchange of messages. In their conversation, Ms. K.V. mentioned, “The Song is full of them,” referring to the presence of cameras in common areas, not inside the apartments.

Regarding the reason for installing cameras, Ms. K.V. explained that valuable items had been taken previously, so the host had proactively installed cameras for security and to prevent theft. She assured that the cameras were positioned to face the door and were not intended to invade guests’ privacy. However, she acknowledged that not informing guests about the cameras was an oversight on her part, creating an unpleasant experience for them.

Ms. K.V. apologized to the guests and affirmed that there was no malicious intent, contrary to misinformation circulating on social media. She also cooperated with the police and the camera installers to provide an objective account of the incident.

L.L. emphasized that she was not generalizing about all apartments in The Song and that any additional information shared on social media was the responsibility of those sharing it.
