Vietnam’s seafood processing and export association, VASEP, reported a positive growth in the country’s catfish exports, with a 23% increase in July 2024.

Notably, exports to major markets witnessed double-digit growth rates ranging from 20% to 40%. Cumulative exports of this billion-dollar fish reached nearly $1.09 billion in the first seven months of the year, a 7.7% increase compared to the same period last year.

China remains the primary market for Vietnamese catfish, with a value of $317 million, despite a 2.3% decrease compared to 2023. This market mainly consumes large-sized catfish (>1.2kg/fish) in the form of whole fish or fillets.

Notably, China also presents a promising opportunity for by-products like catfish bladders. Once considered a waste product, these bladders are now being utilized by businesses and processed into dried goods for domestic consumption and export.

In the first seven months of this year, Vietnam’s catfish bladder exports reached approximately $50 million, with exports to China alone accounting for $40 million, or 80% of the total.

In the market, dried catfish bladders are available at various price points. For instance, attractive-looking catfish bladders are priced at VND 160,000/100 grams (VND 1.6 million/kg), while catfish tube bladders fetch VND 170,000/100 grams. Catfish belly bladders are more expensive, ranging from VND 350,000 to VND 850,000/100 grams, and catfish snow bladders are priced at VND 300,000/100 grams. Catfish line bladders cost VND 8.2 million/500 grams, and catfish bladders are priced at VND 850,000/500 grams.

It is worth noting that catfish bladders, often discarded as inedible, offer numerous health benefits due to their composition of sticky protein, trace elements, vitamins, zinc, and iron.

In traditional medicine, catfish bladders are highly valued for their kidney-tonifying and blood-enriching properties. They are commonly used in soups and broths to improve joint health, enhance the body’s endurance, and reduce inflammation.

The restorative properties of catfish bladders make them a popular ingredient in post-surgical and postpartum care foods, aiding in recovery and overall health improvement. Additionally, the high arginine content in catfish bladders contributes to maintaining healthy blood vessels. These bladders are also rich in vitamins, including vitamin A, which enhances flexibility, reduces fatigue, and improves brain function.
