In recent years, Musang King durian, dubbed the “king of durians,” has made its way into the Vietnamese fruit market. With its distinct flavor, delicious taste, and creamy texture, Musang King quickly gained popularity. However, its exorbitant price once made many hesitant to indulge in this exotic fruit.
When it was first introduced to Vietnam, frozen Musang King durian pulp commanded a price of 1.4-1.8 million VND per kg, far exceeding the prices of domestic durian varieties. Despite the high price, this renowned durian was highly sought-after, but supply could not always meet the demand.
Over time, the price of Musang King started to cool down, yet it remained relatively high. Ripe Musang King was sold at 800,000 – 900,000 VND per kg, still causing buyers to ponder before making a purchase.
However, a surprising turn of events took place recently. Musang King durian suddenly became widely available and incredibly affordable.
At fruit shops and online markets, consumers can easily find Musang King durian offered at a mere 99,000 – 160,000 VND per kg. In some cases, the prices are even lower than those of popular durian varieties such as Ri6 and Monthong.

When asked about this phenomenon, sellers attributed the significant price drop to several factors. Firstly, the supply of Musang King durian has become increasingly abundant. Many orchards have successfully cultivated and propagated Musang King trees, resulting in higher yields and a more stable supply.
Secondly, the competitive landscape among growers and distributors has played a role in driving prices down. Lastly, the emergence of Musang King orchards across the country has contributed to diversifying the supply sources and reducing the overall cost of the product.
Ms. Luu Hoa, owner of a fresh fruit shop in Dong Da, Hanoi, acknowledged the unprecedented affordability of Musang King durian. “Last year at this time, I could barely get my hands on this variety at 455,000 VND per kg. This year, the supply is abundant, and I can sell it for just 120,000 – 150,000 VND per kg. Meanwhile, Ri6 and Monthong durians are priced at 170,000 VND per whole fruit, making them more expensive than Musang King,” she said.
According to Ms. Hoa, the ample supply of Musang King this year has led to a substantial decrease in prices. In previous years, she could only import a few dozen kilograms or up to one tael per shipment. Now, she can import several taels or even tons at a time.

With the significant price drop of Musang King durian, consumers now have more opportunities to indulge in this special fruit without breaking the bank. However, to ensure the quality of the product, it is advisable for consumers to purchase Musang King from reputable shops that provide clear information about the fruit’s origin.
