According to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in July, Vietnam exported 15,334 tons of tea, worth $27.4 million, up 9.7% in volume and 2.1% in value compared to the previous month; up 46.4% in volume and 50% in value compared to July 2023.
In the first seven months of 2024, tea exports reached 77,280 tons, worth $133.4 million, up 31.6% in volume and 33.5% in value compared to the same period in 2023. The average export price of tea reached $1,726 per ton, up 1.5%.
Pakistan remained Vietnam’s largest tea export market in the first seven months, reaching 22.3 thousand tons, worth $47 million, down 3.2% in volume but up 6.3% in value compared to the same period in 2023. The average export price reached $2,100 per ton, up nearly 10%.
After a sharp decline at the beginning of the year, this market is gradually regaining its import momentum compared to last year. The main type of tea exported to Pakistan is black tea, which is also the main export product of Vietnam, accounting for about 80% of the total export volume.
The second largest export market was Taiwan, reaching 8,131 tons, equivalent to nearly $14 million, with an average price of $1,712 per ton, up 2.4% in volume, 6.3% in value, and 3.7% in price compared to the same period.
Notably, China was Vietnam’s third-largest export market, with 7,826 tons, equivalent to $11.3 million, up 236% in volume and 107% in value. The average export price of tea to this market was only $1,446 per ton, down 38.2% compared to the same period.
In July alone, this country imported 1,528 tons of tea from Vietnam, equivalent to over $2 million, up 502% in volume and 385% in value compared to the same period last year.
The exceptionally high growth rate is mainly due to the low base at the beginning of 2023 and the strong growth of tea exports in the last months of 2023, creating momentum for 2024.
Vietnam is currently the fifth largest tea exporter in the world and the seventh largest tea producer globally. Vietnamese tea products are now exported to 74 countries and territories.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country has 120,000 hectares of tea-growing areas, 257 industrial tea processing enterprises, and a total designed capacity of 5,200 tons of fresh buds per day.
The Vietnam Tea Association assessed that in recent years, the yield and output of tea in Vietnam have continuously increased thanks to positive changes in varieties, cultivation techniques, and production organization.
In addition, many mechanisms and policies have been issued by the authorities, from central to local levels, to promote tea production and consumption.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, research by Research and Markets shows that the global tea market reached $24.3 billion in 2016 and is expected to reach $37.5 billion by 2025. The growth of the tea industry is accelerating due to changing lifestyles and increasing consumer awareness of the health benefits of drinking tea. This presents a favorable opportunity for Vietnamese export enterprises.
