With a staggering 2,779 islands, Vietnam boasts a diverse and breathtaking coastline. The province of Quang Ninh stands out as the most island-rich region, home to over 2,000 islands. These islands account for 11.5% of the province’s total area and comprise approximately two-thirds of the country’s islands. The famous Ha Long Bay alone boasts 1,969 islands, while the archipelago of Co To contributes an additional 50 islands to the region’s allure.

Quang Ninh’s island abundance presents a significant advantage for its tourism industry. According to the provincial government’s online portal, from January to July 2024, Quang Ninh welcomed nearly 13 million visitors, marking a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This included over 2.2 million international arrivals, matching the total international visitor count for the whole of 2023. The province also recorded over 4.5 million guest nights, and tourism revenue surpassed VND 29.3 trillion, reflecting a remarkable 40% year-on-year growth.

In just seven months, Quang Ninh has nearly reached its 2019 tourism benchmarks, the golden era before the COVID-19 pandemic. The province is on track to surpass its annual targets, solidifying its position as a leading tourism destination in Vietnam.

In late August 2024, Quang Ninh is set to welcome a group of 4,500 Indian tourists, as shared by Vietravel, a leading travel company. This group represents a high-spending segment and is one of the largest Indian delegations to visit Ha Long Bay to date.

Given the impressive growth trajectory, the province has revised its annual tourism targets. The new goal is to attract 19 million domestic and international visitors, a 2 million increase from the initial plan for the year.

To achieve this ambitious target, Quang Ninh is implementing a range of strategies. These include market expansion and diversification, maximizing the potential of year-round tourism, developing new tourism products, and gearing up for the upcoming high season for international arrivals in the last quarter of the year.

The province plans to organize 92 tourism stimulation programs, events, and activities, introducing 37 new tourism products. Additionally, Quang Ninh is working to establish new sea routes from Beihai and Guangzhou, China, to Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, and promoting the existing route from Hainan to Ha Long. These initiatives aim to boost international arrivals, especially from key markets such as China, South Korea, Taiwan, the US, France, Australia, the UK, Germany, and Japan.

Tourism is a cornerstone of Quang Ninh’s economy, as outlined in the provincial master plan. By 2025, the province aims to welcome 18-20 million visitors, including 4.5-5 million international tourists, with a direct contribution to GRDP of 11-12%. Looking ahead to 2030, Quang Ninh envisions becoming a leading and sustainable tourism hub, attracting 25.4 million visitors, including 8.7 million international arrivals, and contributing approximately 15-16% to the province’s GRDP.
