On August 15, to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day, the Politburo held a meeting with former leaders of the Party, State, and Vietnam Fatherland Front to provide updates on the country’s situation in the first months of 2024 and discuss key tasks for the remaining months of the year and beyond.
Honoring the Contributions of Past Generations
The meeting was attended by General Secretary and President To Lam, former General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, former President Nguyen Minh Triet, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, and former National Assembly Chairmen Nguyen Van An, Nguyen Sinh Hung, and Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized the crucial role of past and present leaders in the country’s achievements, acknowledging their invaluable contributions, dedication, wisdom, and responsibility. He highlighted that despite their retirement, these leaders continue to play a supportive role and provide insightful advice, serving as a strong foundation for the current leadership.
Striking a Balance in Foreign Relations with Major Powers
General Secretary and President To Lam briefed the attendees on the Party and State’s top priorities, including the resolute leadership and breakthrough strategies to achieve the goals set by the 13th National Party Congress. He underscored the need to prioritize removing institutional obstacles and creating a conducive environment for all lawful activities, thus contributing to national development.
To overcome challenges and achieve the goals of the 13th National Party Congress, as well as prepare for the 14th Congress and usher in a new era for the nation, General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized the importance of unity and harnessing internal resources and human potential. He noted the intense strategic competition among major powers in the Asia-Pacific region and the challenges it poses for Vietnam in balancing its foreign relations with these powers, especially in mitigating economic sanctions.

He affirmed the Party’s consistent foreign policy and its efforts to strengthen political trust, promote national interests, and seize new development opportunities while minimizing negative impacts on the country’s construction and defense.
Regarding Party building and rectification, the General Secretary and President affirmed the Party’s unwavering leadership and its commitment to maintaining organizational integrity and cleanliness. He highlighted the recent anti-corruption efforts, which have recovered hundreds of thousands of billion VND for the state and prosecuted many individuals, including business owners, and exposed limitations, negative practices, and “local interest group” tendencies within ministries, sectors, and localities that hinder the country’s socio-economic development.
The Politburo also reviewed the preparations for the 10th Plenum of the Party Central Committee, agreeing to focus on two groups of proposals: those to be submitted to the 10th Plenum and those aimed at addressing difficulties to promote socio-economic development.
Completing the Leadership Apparatus
According to General Secretary and President To Lam, the upcoming National Assembly session in October 2024 is expected to complete the leadership apparatus by approving key leadership positions. Party committees and authorities at all levels will also be completed to ensure the Party’s leadership in economic, cultural, social, defense, security, and foreign affairs tasks.
