On August 17, the Inland Waterways Authority announced the end of temporary traffic restrictions on the Nghia Hung lock in Nam Dinh province. Waterborne vehicles can now pass through the lock as normal.

Previously, on August 9, the lock management unit reported that the right towing cable of the lock door broke during operation around 11:30 AM. There were two vessels inside the lock chamber at the time, unable to move out immediately.

The management unit promptly decided to halt the lock’s operations to address an oil leak from the gearbox of the balance valve located at the Day River end.

They also developed a plan to fix the issue and advised vessel owners to adjust their routes during the repair work.

The Nghia Hung channel, with a total investment of over $100 million, is the largest canal project in Vietnam, connecting the Day and Ninh Co rivers.

The project, which includes a concrete structure and a lock system, was inaugurated on March 1, 2021, and opened for traffic on July 25, 2023.

The lock, the most valuable component of the channel, features a chamber width of 17 meters, a length of 179 meters, and a bottom depth of -7 meters. It can accommodate vessels with a capacity of up to 3,000 tons.

Since its opening, the Nghia Hung channel has facilitated the passage of thousands of cargo and oil vessels, boosting trade and business in the surrounding areas.

The Ministry of Transport has assigned the Vietnam Inland Waterways Administration to manage, operate, and maintain the Nghia Hung channel and lock according to regulations.

The Nghia Hung inland waterway, including the lock, is 2.104 kilometers long. It starts at km 8+300 of the Ninh Co River (Nghia Lac commune, Nghia Hung district, Nam Dinh province) and ends at km 35+450 of the Day River (Nghia Son commune, Nghia Hung district, Nam Dinh province).

Along with the Vietnam Inland Waterways Administration, other state management agencies in the field of inland waterway traffic and infrastructure protection are responsible for performing their tasks and exercising their rights according to regulations.
