On August 19, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) cited data from Japan’s Ministry of Finance, stating that in the first half of 2024, exports of scallops in shells to Vietnam reached 13,075 tons, surging by 2,078% compared to the same period last year. The average price stood at 231 JPY/kg, almost halving from the previous year.

Aside from Vietnam, Japan has been boosting scallop exports to the US and other Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand and Indonesia.

Japanese Scallops promoted at a trade event in Ho Chi Minh City

However, Japan’s overall scallop exports during the six-month period dropped by 52% year-on-year, indicating that new markets have yet to make up for the lost market share in China.

In August 2023, China imposed a ban on Japanese seafood due to the release of treated wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean.

Annually, China imported up to 95,000 tons of raw scallops from Japan. These scallops were consumed domestically and also processed for export to other markets.

According to seafood experts, the dramatic increase in scallop exports to Vietnam, a 20-fold rise, is mainly for re-exporting after processing; domestic consumption has not grown at such a rapid pace.

In early 2024, 12 seafood processing and trading companies from Hokkaido, Japan’s scallop-producing region, visited Vietnamese seafood processing factories to forge cooperation and replace traditional processing partners in China.
