The tram, dubbed “black gold” in Huong Son, Ha Tinh, is a prized crop. About 500 trees are cultivated in Son Ninh commune, yielding over 20 tons annually, accounting for two-thirds of the district’s output.

The black tram is a tall tree, reaching heights of 10 to 30 meters at maturity. It takes about ten years for the tree to bear fruit.

August marks the peak of the black tram’s ripening season, and it is during this time that farmers are usually busy harvesting the fruit, reaping profits in the tens of millions of dong. However, this year, the orchards in Huong Son are unusually quiet due to an unprecedented poor yield.

Mr. Nguyen Van Han, a resident of Son Ninh commune, has about 15 black tram trees, but only half of them bore fruit this season. He estimates a loss of around VND 30 million for his family this year.

“I’ve never seen the tram farmers so sad,” Mr. Han shared. “The trees did produce fruit, but in extremely small quantities. The poor yield has caused a surge in prices. Fresh tram fruit now sells for 120,000-130,000 VND/kg, with the best quality reaching up to 150,000 VND/kg.”

According to locals in Son Ninh commune, despite the high prices, orchard owners are still suffering significant losses as most traders had already paid deposits to buy the fruit when the trees were in bloom.

To harvest the tram fruit, traders have to hire people to climb the tall trees, paying wages of 800,000-1,000,000 VND per day.

The tram fruit from Huong Son is renowned for its delicious, nutty flavor, making it a favorite among many.

After purchasing the fruit, some are sold directly to consumers, while others are supplied to processing facilities. The majority, however, are transported to northern provinces for sale.

Mr. Pham Anh Hao, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Son Ninh Commune, explained to VTC News that this year’s yield is only one-third of that of previous years. The main reason for this is the change in weather conditions, with increased rainfall leading to a lower fruit-setting rate.
