Udemy, a leading online learning and teaching platform based in San Francisco, has recently expanded its international course collection to include courses in Vietnamese. This move enables over 16,000 Udemy Business enterprise customers globally to access more than 200 high-quality courses taught by experienced Vietnamese practitioners.
With this expansion, Vietnamese becomes the 15th language in Udemy’s International Course Collection, offering essential skill-building content to employees in their native language.
“Providing a flexible and effective learning solution for the Vietnamese market has allowed us to partner with many organizations and learners,” shared Rich Qiu, President of New Ventures at Udemy. “Hence, our plan is to continue growing in this market to support even more organizations and learners.”
VIETNAM: A KEY MARKET WITH IMMENSE POTENTIAL
A Statista report on the development of Vietnam’s online learning platforms indicates significant room for growth in online education in general and for platforms like Udemy in particular.
Mr. Qiu stated, “Vietnam is one of our key markets for collaboration, helping connect instructors with learners and enabling learners to acquire the skills they need to advance their careers and contribute to the economy.”
Additionally, according to Mr. Qiu, Vietnam’s digital economy accounts for nearly 15% of its GDP. Compared to regional countries like Singapore, with its digital economy contributing 17% of GDP, Vietnam has made significant progress in digital and digital transformation.
“This presents an opportunity for us to help businesses accelerate and keep pace with the evolving digital economy,” emphasized Mr. Qiu. “Overall, companies in Vietnam are experiencing robust growth, which has driven the demand for emerging skills related to personal development, information technology, leadership, and management.”
The trend of lifelong learning is also witnessing a high demand in Vietnam. Alan Malcolm, Director of Strategic Partnerships for New Ventures at Udemy, highlighted that 97% of Vietnamese adults continue to learn in their leisure time, compared to Japan, where he resides, with only 45% of the workforce continuing their education.
When Udemy first expanded its business in Vietnam, it had a limited number of local instructors and courses in Vietnamese. As a result, most learners had to enroll in English-language courses. Despite English proficiency not being as high as in some other countries, Vietnamese learners were eager to learn online and take advantage of what Udemy offered on its platform to enhance their knowledge and skills.
“So, that’s a really positive sign for us,” he believed. “People here really want to learn because they all believe that education is the key to improving their lives. That also aligns with our mission of changing lives through learning by ensuring that everyone can access the newest and most relevant skills.”
LEVERAGING STRENGTHS TO OVERCOME CHALLENGES
For many years, Vietnam has been a dynamic and developing market, where Alan Malcolm believes commercial success and economic growth have outpaced the capacity of the education system.
“Right now, we’re seeing a significant talent gap—a gap in the skills needed to take Vietnam to the next stage of robust economic growth,” emphasized Rich Qiu. “Vietnam has growing companies that are going global, but the talent pool in Vietnam is shallower than in other markets. So, competing for and recruiting talent is incredibly challenging.”
Through Udemy’s Intelligent Learning Platform and diverse community of highly skilled instructors, millions of learners can build their technical and professional skill foundations, from AI-generated content to leadership skills, helping address this challenge.
“I believe organizations are facing these challenges because optimizing the learning and development process is still relatively new in Vietnam,” said Rich Qiu. “Organizations want their employees to have multiple skills, but they don’t have many resources to identify, assess what those skills are, what skills they want in the future, or how to close the skills gap.”
According to Mr. Qiu, each individual possesses a unique set of skills and foundations. The important thing is how organizations identify these skill sets and upgrade them to develop human resources that meet their future requirements. He shared, “We are developing an AI-generated skill map that will be launched in the next few months to help each individual create a personalized learning path. I think this will be the key to unlocking the challenge that many organizations are facing.”
