On August 21, 2024, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Fertilizer Association, in collaboration with the China Agricultural Technology Association and the Guangxi Agricultural Technology Association, organized a workshop to promote cooperation in fertilizer production and trade between the two countries.
The workshop was attended by dozens of enterprises in the field of fertilizer and pesticide production and business from various provinces and cities in China and many Vietnamese fertilizer production enterprises.
VIETNAM IMPORTS MORE THAN 3 MILLION TONS OF FERTILIZER IN THE FIRST SEVEN MONTHS OF 2024
Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Phung Ha, Chairman of the Vietnam Fertilizer Association, said that Vietnam is an agricultural country, and therefore has a very high demand for fertilizers. Every year, the Vietnamese agriculture sector consumes 11-12 million tons of various types of fertilizers.
In recent years, Vietnam has made significant progress in achieving self-sufficiency in the production of urea, phosphate fertilizers, and NPK fertilizers. Currently, the total amount of fertilizers produced in Vietnam is about 8 million tons per year, and the rest is imported since there are some products that Vietnam cannot produce domestically.
In 2023, Vietnam exported nearly 1.55 million tons of fertilizers, with a turnover of US$648.9 million. Also, in 2023, Vietnam imported 4.12 million tons of fertilizers, worth over US$1.41 billion, with an average price of US$342.9 per ton. China remains the leading supplier of fertilizers to Vietnam, accounting for nearly 50% of the total volume and value of Vietnam’s fertilizer imports, with 2.4 million tons, equivalent to US$662.46 million, and an average price of US$325.5 per ton, up 19% in volume but down 9.3% in value and 23.8% in price compared to 2022.
Russia was the second-largest supplier, accounting for 7% of the total volume and 9.4% of the total value, with 288,727 tons, worth US$132.12 million, and an average price of US$457.6 per ton. Vietnam’s fertilizer imports from the Southeast Asian market reached 470,755 tons, valued at US$168.25 million.
According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in the first seven months of 2024, Vietnam’s fertilizer imports reached nearly 3.06 million tons, valued at nearly US$980.47 million, with an average price of US$320.9 per ton, up 55.5% in volume, 46.3% in value, but down 5.9% in price compared to the same period in 2023.

“In the first seven months of 2024, China remained the leading supplier of fertilizers to Vietnam, accounting for 40.8% of the total volume and 37.4% of the total value of fertilizer imports, with nearly 1.25 million tons, equivalent to US$366.65 million, and an average price of US$293.9 per ton, up 18.8% in volume, 13.1% in value, but down 4.8% in price compared to the same period last year.
The Russian market ranked second, accounting for 11.9% of the total volume and 16.9% of the total value, with 364,402 tons, worth US$165.48 million, and an average price of US$454.1 per ton, up 397.9% in volume, 325.4% in value, but down 14.6% in price compared to the same period in 2023.
Fertilizer imports from Laos reached 211,944 tons, valued at US$54.99 million, up 47.3% in volume and 4.2% in value compared to the same period last year, accounting for over 6.9% of the total volume and 5.6% of the total value of Vietnam’s fertilizer imports.”
The Chairman of the Vietnam Fertilizer Association proposed strengthening cooperation between Vietnamese and Chinese enterprises in organic fertilizer production and distribution, aiming to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and promote sustainable agriculture. In this field, China is considered a strategic partner for Vietnamese agriculture due to its remarkable achievements in applying advanced science and technology to agricultural production.
FERTILIZER INDUSTRY NEEDS TO IMPORT RAW MATERIALS
Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Dung, Director of the National Fertilizer Testing and Analysis Center (Plant Protection Department – Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), shared Vietnam’s orientation in importing fertilizer and pesticide raw materials from China.
According to Ms. Dung, the Vietnamese market has a high demand for high-quality products and advanced technology from China. Therefore, we hope for closer cooperation between enterprises of the two countries to improve the economic value and the lives of farmers.
Mr. Feng Weidong, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Agricultural Technology Association, stated that Vietnam and China have similar agricultural development with many similarities. However, China has taken a step further in applying high technology in production.
“The China Agricultural Technology Association (CATEA) is a national social organization in the agricultural sector under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China. The association was established by the decision of the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China. The association’s members mainly include enterprises, organizations, social organizations, and individuals related to agricultural technology promotion. The association’s functions and tasks are to promote agricultural technology, agricultural production, and rural economic development.”
“Strengthening cooperation between fertilizer production enterprises in Vietnam, with the Vietnam Fertilizer Association as the focal point, and fertilizer enterprises in China, with CATEA as the focal point, will help Vietnam quickly access the latest scientific and technological advances and soon overcome the current limitations of the agricultural sector.”
With the commitment from both sides, agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and China promises to achieve significant achievements, not only improving economic value but also contributing to environmental protection and enhancing the lives of rural people in both countries.
