On the morning of August 25, at Go! An Lac supermarket in Binh Tan district, Ho Chi Minh City, many customers were surprised to find mooncakes at extremely affordable prices, starting from just VND 29,000 per cake.

“These mooncakes cost less than VND 30,000, but they are of good quality and come in a variety of fillings, including mung bean, lotus seed, and mixed nuts. They may be small, but they are from a reputable brand. With such reasonable prices, I can buy one of each kind for my family to enjoy without having to worry about the cost,” shared Ms. Huong, a 44-year-old factory worker in Tan Tao Industrial Park.

At this supermarket’s mooncake counter, located in the center of the store, our reporter observed that the cakes were priced quite reasonably, averaging around VND 55,000-65,000 per cake. Various flavors were available, such as mung bean and durian, green tea and red bean, lotus seed and egg, taro and egg, coconut milk, tiramisu, and lava.

Bulk purchases also come with discounts. Specifically, buying four GO! mooncakes gets you a VND 20,000 discount, and purchasing six cakes earns a VND 30,000 reduction. The store offers a 15% discount on mooncake orders totaling VND 1 million or more.

Co.op Mart, a supermarket chain, has also launched handcrafted traditional mooncakes at affordable prices this season. The cakes are priced from VND 50,900 per cake, weighing 150g, and feature enticing fillings like mixed nuts and salted egg, taro and salted egg, among others.

Saigon Co.op’s representative stated that this year, the company has increased its mooncake production by 30% compared to last year, with a significant focus on affordable pricing. The mooncake boxes are designed to be aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly, allowing consumers to recycle them after use.

Meanwhile, leading bakery companies have also introduced mooncake products in the affordable segment to stay competitive. According to Orion Vietnam, the economy is still facing challenges in 2024, so the brand has launched mooncakes named “Trăng Tỏ Chân Tình” (Sincere Moonlight), focusing on price accessibility for consumers.

As a result, the company has decided to maintain stable prices, with each cake costing around VND 60,000-77,000 and offering about ten flavors, including both savory and vegetarian options, providing customers with a diverse range of choices.

The affordable price segment attracts consumers.

This year, the Tho Phat brand has entered the mooncake market with budget-friendly prices, starting at just VND 50,000 per cake. Bibica also offers mooncakes ranging from VND 50,000 to VND 70,000 per cake, while Kinh Ðô Mondelez’s mooncakes are priced at around VND 60,000-80,000 each.

According to the Givral bakery brand, although purchasing power has decreased due to economic challenges, mooncake sales are expected to remain positive, partly due to stable pricing. This year, Givral introduced a new baked coconut and durian flavor to offer customers a unique taste experience.

“Maintaining reasonable prices allows many families to enjoy delicious mooncakes without worrying too much about the cost,” shared the Givral representative.
