Mr. Tran Phu Lu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Trade and Investment Promotion (ITPC), shared insights at the workshop titled “Promoting Exports to the Japanese Market and Standards for Accessing the Aeon Vietnam Distribution System.”

The event, organized by ITPC in collaboration with Aeon Topvalu Limited Company and Aeon Vietnam Limited Company on August 26, aimed to support businesses in expanding their export markets to Japan and updating them on the standards of the AEON distribution system.

The year 2024 has witnessed significant activities to bolster the cooperative relationship between Ho Chi Chi Minh City and Japan. Notable examples include a series of trade, investment, and tourism promotions and the event “Ho Chi Minh City Day in Osaka, Japan” in May. ITPC also organized a business matching program in June, connecting Vietnamese enterprises with Japanese importers and distributors and introducing Vietnamese products in the modern AEON distribution system in Japan.

Mr. Tran Phu Lu, Director of ITPC, speaking at the workshop, “Promoting Exports to the Japanese Market and Standards for Accessing the Aeon Vietnam Distribution System.”

As per the schedule, ITPC will hold the Vietnam Enterprise Product Exhibition and the Business Conference on bringing goods to the AEON supermarket chain in 2024 at AEON Mall Tan Phu from December 12 to 15.

At the workshop, the representative of the Commercial Counselor of Vietnam in Osaka, Japan, shared that the groups of Vietnamese goods with potential for export to the Japanese market include textiles and garments, means of transport and spare parts, machinery, equipment and tools, wood and wooden products, seafood, and telephones and components. Currently, Vietnam accounts for only about 3% of Japan’s total import and export turnover, indicating significant room and opportunities for growth.

Additionally, there are approximately 500,000 Vietnamese people living, studying, and working in Japan. This community represents a potential consumer force and opens up numerous opportunities for Vietnamese food products to enter the Japanese market.

According to Mr. Fukui Tomoaki, Senior Director of the Commercial Department of AEON TOPVALU Vietnam Limited Company, Vietnamese enterprises need to ensure product quality standards, from cultivation and harvesting processes to preservation, production, processing, packaging, and circulation. Emphasizing sustainable development and environmental friendliness is essential. Furthermore, participating in promotional activities and programs in Japan is crucial to increasing market share and conquering Japanese customers.

Data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs indicates that the import and export turnover between Vietnam and Japan in the first seven months of 2024 is estimated at 25.87 billion USD, a 4% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Vietnam’s export turnover to Japan is estimated at 13.46 billion USD, a 2.8% increase compared to the previous year.

For many years, Japan has been one of Vietnam’s most important economic and trade partners. Free trade agreements such as the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership (AJCEP), the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA), the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) have provided practical frameworks, fostering trade, investment, and business relationships between the two countries.
