The $200 Million Bridge Unveiling Soon: Connecting Vietnam’s Most Industrialized District to its Second Largest Seaport

The Phuoc An Bridge will connect Nhon Trach - the district with the highest number of industrial parks in Vietnam (9), to Cai Mep - Thi Vai, a port complex that accounts for approximately 20% of the country's import and export throughput.

The Phuoc An Bridge spans the Thi Vai River, connecting Phu My town in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province with Nhon Trach district in Dong Nai province. Once completed, the bridge will link the second-largest port cluster in Vietnam (Cai Mep – Thi Vai in Phu My, Ba Ria-Vung Tau) with Nhon Trach district, which boasts nine industrial parks—the highest number in the country.

The Phuoc An Bridge project commenced in June 2023 with an investment of nearly VND 5,000 billion, including a construction value of approximately VND 4,000 billion. The project is expected to be completed by 2027.

The bridge has a total length of approximately 4.3 km, with the bridge section spanning about 3.5 km. The approach road is 250 meters long, and the connection to Phuoc An Port is over 600 meters. The project is a hybrid girder-cable bridge, featuring two towers on the main span. The distance between the two main towers is 250 meters.

The project is divided into five main construction packages, including four packages for bridge construction and one for concrete and lighting. To ensure the project’s progress, hundreds of workers from four contractors are working in shifts to maintain 24/7 construction.

As per the design, the approach road has a width of 23.5 meters, while the main bridge is 25 meters wide and comprises four lanes for motor vehicles and two lanes for non-motorized vehicles. The bridge is designed to urban road standards with a speed limit of 70 km/h.

The bridge’s foundations will be made of concrete, adhering to technical standards that ensure a 100-year lifespan, even in the saline conditions of the river, preventing corrosion of the internal steel reinforcement.

On April 15, 2024, Dong Nai province decided to convert nearly 3 hectares of protective forest in Phuoc An commune, Nhon Trach district, managed by the Long Thanh Protective Forest Management Board, for the Phuoc An Bridge project. Regarding land clearance, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province has already completed compensation and site clearance.

Upon completion, the bridge will facilitate the swift transportation of goods from the Mekong Delta provinces to the Cai Mep – Thi Vai port, shortening the distance by nearly 30 km compared to the previous route. Specifically, after the bridge is built, vehicles from the industrial parks in Ba Ria-Vung Tau and the Cai Mep – Thi Vai container ports can cross the bridge to reach the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh Expressway and continue to the Mekong Delta via the Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway or the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway.

Additionally, the bridge will reduce the risk of accidents and improve road safety on existing routes. The nearly VND 5,000 billion bridge is also expected to increase property values in both areas where the project is located.

Apart from the Phuoc An Bridge project, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province is also expediting other key projects to keep pace with the province’s rapid development, such as the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway, the expansion of the Hoi Bai-Chau Pha road, and the main road in Vung Tau.
