In the final days of August, at the Memorial Area for Southerners, cadres, soldiers, and students who moved to the North in Sam Son City, Thanh Hoa, the construction crew is rushing to complete the monument “The Ship to the North.”

According to the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, this area is expected to host a series of events commemorating the 70th anniversary of Southerners, cadres, and soldiers moving to the North, which will be held on the evening of September 1st.

The Memorial Area for Southerners, cadres, soldiers, and students who moved to the North is built along the Ma River in Quang Tien Ward, Sam Son City.

The project, with a scale of over 40,000 square meters, was initiated in late August 2022 by the Sam Son City People’s Committee as the investor. The construction has a total capital of nearly VND 255 billion, including VND 76 billion supported by the provincial budget and the remaining from the city budget and social mobilization.

The memorial area is divided into three sub-areas, with Zone A, covering approximately 13,600 square meters, considered the center, featuring a ship-shaped monument and a large arch-shaped relief sculpture.

As per the design, the ship is made of reinforced concrete, and the arch-shaped relief sculpture is crafted from granite blocks. Additionally, there is a protective embankment for the monument and auxiliary items.
The “Ship to the North” monument, made of reinforced concrete, spans approximately 3,200 square meters. The highest point, the ship’s bow, stands at 12 meters, equivalent to a three-story building. From this vantage point, one can take in the panoramic view of Hoi Port and a portion of Sam Son’s center, with the lower reaches of the Ma River flowing into the sea in the backdrop.
The relief sculptures depicting the reception of cadres, soldiers, and Southerners moving to the North as part of the “Ship to the North” monument are essentially complete.
Along the ship’s sides and at the bow, large statues and reliefs made of white granite from Binh Dinh province are displayed.
Outside the monument’s premises is a designed harbor and a playground offering scenic views.

Following the Geneva Accords of 1954, Thanh Hoa received hundreds of thousands of Southern cadres, soldiers, students, and families moving to the North. During seven phases (from October 15, 1954, to May 1, 1955), the province welcomed 1,869 wounded and sick soldiers; 47,346 cadres; 5,922 students and pupils; and 1,443 families.
