In the final days of August, at the Memorial Area for Southerners, cadres, soldiers, and students who moved to the North in Sam Son City, Thanh Hoa, the construction crew is rushing to complete the monument “The Ship to the North.”
According to the Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, this area is expected to host a series of events commemorating the 70th anniversary of Southerners, cadres, and soldiers moving to the North, which will be held on the evening of September 1st.
The Memorial Area for Southerners, cadres, soldiers, and students who moved to the North is built along the Ma River in Quang Tien Ward, Sam Son City.
The project, with a scale of over 40,000 square meters, was initiated in late August 2022 by the Sam Son City People’s Committee as the investor. The construction has a total capital of nearly VND 255 billion, including VND 76 billion supported by the provincial budget and the remaining from the city budget and social mobilization.
The memorial area is divided into three sub-areas, with Zone A, covering approximately 13,600 square meters, considered the center, featuring a ship-shaped monument and a large arch-shaped relief sculpture.
Following the Geneva Accords of 1954, Thanh Hoa received hundreds of thousands of Southern cadres, soldiers, students, and families moving to the North. During seven phases (from October 15, 1954, to May 1, 1955), the province welcomed 1,869 wounded and sick soldiers; 47,346 cadres; 5,922 students and pupils; and 1,443 families.
