Deputy Minister Hoàng Trung’s visit aimed to expedite market opening for certain fruits in which Vietnam has export advantages; strengthen cooperation between the two ministries in the field of plant protection; and promote technical cooperation and investment in sustainable agricultural production and emission reduction.

At the working session, the two deputy ministers expressed their pleasure at the permission granted for the import and export of American peaches to the Vietnamese market. Simultaneously, the two sides made significant strides in market access for other fruits from both countries.

Specifically, they agreed on the technical requirements for passion fruit from Vietnam and made further progress in the review process for American tangerines.

Prior to this, at a meeting with the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Deputy Minister Hoàng Trung was briefed on the results of the 2024 technical session between the two sides. He acknowledged and highly appreciated the efforts and achievements of both sides in improving market access for plant products by diversifying products and additional pest management measures.

Regarding market access, the two countries agreed to conclude technical discussions and proceed with legal procedures to permit the import of passion fruit from Vietnam. They also initiated the review process for new Vietnamese products, including seedless lemons, guava, and jackfruit; agreed on a list of pests and the next steps in the review process for tangerines, plums, yellow lemons, pomegranates, and some other products to be used as planting materials by the US side.

On additional treatment measures and improvements in plant quarantine procedures, the US side acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals to diversify plant quarantine measures such as hot water treatment, methyl bromide treatment, and cold treatment to reduce costs and facilitate trade between the two countries. They affirmed their commitment to continuing close coordination and implementing the necessary experimental activities to provide a final opinion. The two sides also agreed to implement a measure to fumigate dry goods in containers at the port of import. The US side also pledged to support Vietnam in transitioning to the use of electronic phytosanitary certificates (ePhyto).

The Deputy Minister emphasized that these results would help consolidate and increase the trade value of agro-forestry-fishery products between the two countries in the future. Under the guidance of the Deputy Ministers, the competent authorities of the two countries reached a Cooperation Framework Agreement for the coming time, focusing on strengthening capacity in risk analysis and pest risk reduction, sharing knowledge and research results in pest management for plants, as well as applying digital transformation in quarantine management.

The United States is currently a very important export market for Vietnam’s agro-forestry-fishery products. Vietnam’s exports of these products to the US in 2023 reached 10.96 billion USD, accounting for 20.7% of the country’s total exports of agro-forestry-fishery products to the world.

Currently, Vietnam has eight types of fresh fruit exported to the US market, including dragon fruit, mango, longan, lychee, rambutan, custard apple, grapefruit, and coconut.
