Google is reportedly considering constructing a large-scale data center in Vietnam, according to sources speaking to Reuters.
The location for this massive data center is rumored to be near Ho Chi Minh City, but specific investment details have not been disclosed. It is also unclear when Google will finalize the investment deal, but internal discussions are said to be underway, and the data center could be operational by 2027.
According to Reuters, the data center Google intends to build will be one of the largest types, with power consumption potentially equivalent to that of a major city. A large-scale data center with a 50 MW power consumption can cost anywhere from $300 to $650 million to construct, according to real estate consultancy Jones Lang LaSalle.
Google’s motivation for building the data center likely stems from its growing domestic and international customer base for its cloud services and the robust growth of Vietnam’s digital economy. Sources also revealed to Reuters that Vietnam is the fastest-growing market for YouTube, Google’s renowned video-sharing service.
Currently, the largest data center operators in Vietnam are the industrial investment firm IDC Becamex and the telecom company VNPT.
Back in May, Nikkei reported that Alibaba was also considering constructing a data center in Vietnam.
