The Electric Revolution: Hyundai Inster – The Compact EV Set to Take Southeast Asia by Storm, with Vietnam as its Next Potential ‘Hot’ Market

The Hyundai Inster, an electric car that has been turning heads in numerous countries, is expected to arrive in Indonesia soon. With a price tag lower than its electric cousin, the Kona, the Inster is set to be a game-changer in the Indonesian market.

According to a Hyundai dealership salesperson in Indonesia, the Hyundai Inster will soon be available in the country. Prior to this, the model was launched in India. Thus, Indonesia could be the first Southeast Asian market to receive Hyundai’s small electric SUV.

Previously, Mr. Fransiscus Soerjopranoto, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID), revealed that the company is conducting a study to determine if the Inster is suitable for the Indonesian market. It is unclear if the Inster will be introduced in Vietnam after Indonesia.

The Inster is expected to become Hyundai’s new affordable electric car, with a price lower than that of the electric Kona. Currently, the Kona Electric is sold in Indonesia starting at IDR 499 million (approximately US$800,000).

The Inster is a two-row, five-passenger electric car. Its dimensions are quite compact, even smaller than the Grand i10, a sub-A-segment car. This urban mini SUV measures 3,825 mm in length, 1,610 mm in width, 1,575 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,580 mm. When compared to other electric vehicles in its class, the Inster is slightly smaller than the VinFast VF 5 Plus.

The Inster features a modern design, both inside and out. Despite being a small, two-door model, the Inster’s interior is well-appointed with two large screens, a multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control, and push-button start, among other features.

The Hyundai Inster offers two powertrain configurations: Standard and Long Range. The Standard version uses a single 95 hp, 147 Nm electric motor, paired with a 42 kWh battery that delivers a range of 300 km on a single charge. The Long Range version also uses a single electric motor but with a higher output of 113 hp. It comes with a larger 49 kWh battery that provides a range of 355 km.

The Inster is a global product from Hyundai and has the potential to be launched in many other countries. This presents a great opportunity for Hyundai to expand its electric vehicle market share, especially for small cars in new markets.
