Mochi Moon Cake is the latest trend to take over the Mid-Autumn Festival this year. These oversized mochi cakes, weighing 500 grams each, feature a unique stretchy mochi texture combined with savory pork floss and salted duck egg yolk.

Introduced as a Chinese specialty, these mochi moon cakes stand out with their generous size and creative filling. Each cake boasts a stretchy mochi layer, enveloping a savory blend of pork floss and salted duck egg yolk. They are priced affordably at 60,000 to 90,000 VND per cake.

According to YouNet ECI, a leading e-commerce market research company, Mochi Moon Cake has unexpectedly claimed the top 3 spot among the most trending Mid-Autumn Festival treats on social media, surpassing popular flavors like taro, matcha, durian, and lava egg yolk.

It’s not just about the views, though; Mochi Moon Cakes are consistently selling out on Tiktok shop, proving their popularity beyond clicks and views.

Ecomheat, YouNet ECI’s data analytics platform, collected sales data from the top 12 best-selling Mochi Moon Cake vendors from August 1st to August 10th, 2024. The results are impressive: a total revenue of 1.27 billion VND from nearly 23,000 cakes sold.

However, Nguyen Duc Le, Deputy Director of the Department of Management Market Management, warns consumers to be cautious when purchasing handmade or imported moon cakes of unknown origin.

Mr. Le pointed out that, in addition to Mochi Moon Cakes, there has been a trend in recent years of consuming lava egg yolk moon cakes and imported cakes from neighboring countries. These products have not undergone quality declaration or been inspected by Vietnamese authorities for compliance with local food safety standards.

Despite this, some organizations and individuals, driven by profit, have smuggled and distributed these products in the domestic market.

According to the General Department of Market Management, sellers take advantage of consumers’ preference for foreign products and their desire to stand out. As a result, a significant volume of moon cakes with unclear origins and potential food safety risks are sold each year.

To address this issue, the General Department of Market Management is collaborating with local authorities to enhance inspection and enforcement, putting an end to such violations.

Additionally, they are conducting educational campaigns to raise consumer awareness. The department encourages consumers to purchase only cakes with clear origins and quality certifications to ensure food safety.
