The $1 Billion Highway Project Connecting 4 Provinces in Southern Vietnam: After 12 Years of Stalled Progress, Construction is Now Rapidly Underway with an Expected Opening on a Significant Occasion

Chơn Thành - Đức Hòa is a stretch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway that traverses the provinces of Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh, and Long An. Once completed, this route will be a 6-lane expressway with a speed limit of 100 km/h, offering a seamless and efficient travel experience for motorists.

The Ho Chi Minh Road project, spanning Chơn Thành – Đức Hòa, covers a length of 72.85 km across four provinces: Bình Phước, Bình Dương, Tây Ninh, and Long An. These provinces are part of the key southern economic region, which includes Ho Chi Minh City.

The project commenced in 2009 but was halted in 2011. After 12 years of financial challenges, the Chơn Thành – Đức Hòa road construction project has been restarted to complete the unfinished construction items and prevent waste of state investment.

The project is divided into three construction packages. Deo Ca Group is the contractor for Package XL01, valued at over VND 681 billion, with a length of 31.5 km in Bình Dương Province. The contract duration is 730 days (2 years).

In its final stage, the Chơn Thành – Đức Hòa route will be a 6-lane expressway with a designed speed of 100 km/h. The current phase is a divided highway with 2 lanes.

The construction output of the entire project has reached 26% of the contract value so far, basically ensuring progress. It is expected to complete 7 months ahead of schedule and open to traffic on April 30, 2025, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and the reunification of the country.

To achieve this, Deo Ca contractor has organized simultaneous deployment along the route with 16 teams, 251 officers, engineers, and technicians, along with 81 main construction equipment.

The section through Bình Dương Province has completed the subgrade, with 26/31 km of base course and 4/31 km of asphalt concrete pavement. The drainage pipes are essentially complete.

The entire project includes 14 bridges (3 new bridges and 11 bridges under construction from the previous phase). The section through Bình Dương has 6 bridges, with 10 teams focusing on their construction.

Among them, Thanh An Bridge is the project’s largest, spanning the Saigon River and connecting Bình Dương and Tây Ninh provinces. The bridge has 13 spans with a total length of 617.6 m and a width of 13.75 m.

One challenge for the project is that only 97% of the land has been cleared so far. On August 20, Mr. Nguyen Van Loi, Secretary of Bình Dương Province, visited the site and requested that the leaders of Dầu Tiếng and Bàu Bàng districts develop a plan and mobilize the people to hand over 100% of the cleared land to the contractor by October 2024.

Upon completion, the Chơn Thành – Đức Hòa project will contribute to the connectivity of the entire Ho Chi Minh Road with 2 lanes, sharing traffic with the longitudinal axes of the Southeast region and gradually completing the transport network, ensuring national defense and security in the Southeast and Central Highlands regions.
