On August 31st, Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Director of Thua Thien-Hue Tourism Department, announced that he had forwarded information about a tourist being overcharged 90,000 VND for three glasses of sugar cane juice to the People’s Committee of Hue City and Thuy Xuan Ward for investigation and handling.
Previously, on the Facebook social media group “Hue an gi, o dau?,” an anonymous account reported spending 90,000 VND on three glasses of sugar cane juice at a stall across from the ticket counter for King Tu Duc’s tomb.
” She invited us to park our cars for free and then asked us to support her by buying a drink. I bought three glasses for 90,000 VND and was shocked. When I asked if the price was correct, she replied, “You’re a tourist, so you have to accept it.” I felt sad because the ladies are usually very friendly, but this time it was unexpected. To be honest, in Hanoi, sugar cane juice costs 18,000-20,000 VND per liter, but now the ancient capital is more expensive than the capital city. Everyone, please note the parking location… ,” the tourist posted on Facebook.
The post garnered attention from many people, most of whom expressed outrage at the stall owner’s “overcharging” behavior. Some shared similar experiences of being overcharged for drinks at stalls around King Tu Duc’s tomb.
“That’s right, I bought a glass of sugar cane juice for 30,000 VND this morning. I’m speechless…,” commented a Facebook user with the name Hoa Dai.
Minhh Hoang, another Facebook user, advised: ” Report this to Hue – S (Hue Smart City application) so they can take action. In Hue, a glass of sugar cane juice should cost between 15,000 and 20,000 VND at most. Many people have warned about this particular stall, but no one has reported it on Hue-S, which is damaging the image of Hue.”
Notably, according to several people, this is not the first time tourists have been overcharged for drinks near King Tu Duc’s tomb. Mr. Q.T., a resident of Hue City, shared: ” Not just during this holiday, but last Sunday, my colleagues and I bought five glasses and were charged 150,000 VND.”
Mr. V.T., also a resident of Hue City, added: ” Coconut water here has been sold for 80,000 VND per fruit for years. In general, everything in front of King Tu Duc’s tomb is overpriced.”
