On September 5th, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court of Appeals tried an appeal case relating to the Saigon Co.op (Lien Hiep HTX TM Ho Chi Minh City) and six defendants who had petitioned for reduced sentences and suspended jail terms. Saigon Co.op also appealed for leniency for its former employees.

In the first trial, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court sentenced Diep Dung, former Chairman of Saigon Co.op’s Board of Directors, to 10 years in prison for “Abuse of Power in Performance of Official Duties.” Mr. Dung was held responsible for unilaterally directing the transfer of 1,000 billion VND from Saigon Co.op, resulting in a loss of over 115 billion VND for the company.
Mr. Dung did not appeal the first-instance judgment. However, the appellate court considered his case and reduced his sentence to eight years, taking into account several mitigating circumstances, including his repayment of 17 billion VND.
Ton That Hao, former CEO of Dia Oc Dai A JSC, and Vo Thanh Trung, former CEO of Dau Tu Phat Trien Do Thi Moi Co., Ltd., had their sentences reduced from one year to one and a half years in prison.
The accomplices in the case also received reduced sentences ranging from one to one and a half years in prison, although their requests for suspended sentences were not accepted.
