The Economic Zone, Spanning the Size of Hanoi’s Inner City, Features a Host of Industrial Parks, Sea Ports, and a Future Private Airport

The Thai Binh Economic Zone in Tien Hai will be home to a coastal specialized airport by 2030. In addition to this, the area will also see the development of a seaport capable of accommodating ships up to 50,000 tons. This ambitious plan showcases a commitment to transforming the region into a bustling hub of activity, connecting it to both domestic and international markets.

In 2017, the Thai Binh Economic Zone was established by a decision of the Prime Minister of Vietnam. This coastal economic zone spans an area of 305 sq. km across two districts: Thai Thuy and Tien Hai, including the adjacent coastal area. Remarkably, this area is even larger than the combined size of Hanoi’s 12 inner districts (304 sq. km)

The Thai Binh Economic Zone aims to maximize its natural advantages and strategic location for economic, trade, and service connections with neighboring localities. It aspires to become a diverse and breakthrough economic zone for the province. The photo depicts the Tien Hai Industrial Park.

To enhance efficiency, the Thai Binh Economic Zone is divided into functional areas: Thai Binh Power Center (8 sq. km); Industrial-Urban-Service Area (80 sq. km); Seaport Area (5 sq. km); Tourism and Service Area (30 sq. km); and Residential Area.

Since its establishment seven years ago, the Thai Binh Economic Zone has witnessed significant investments in vital transport infrastructure projects, including the Coastal Road; the road connecting Lien Ha Thai Industrial Park to Cau Song Hoa Bridge; the CT.08 Expressway section passing through Thai Binh and Nam Dinh provinces; the road from Thai Binh City to Con Vanh, and other axis roads connecting functional areas. Notably, according to the Thai Binh Provincial Planning for the period of 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050, approved by the Prime Minister, Thai Binh Province will have a dedicated coastal airport. It is expected that after 2030, when the Thai Binh Economic Zone’s infrastructure is completed, the airport will be constructed. Simultaneously, a dual-use aviation cluster will be established to serve tourism, rescue, and national defense in the border area of Thai Binh Province. This aviation cluster will include helicopter landing pads and seaplane landing areas along the coast. Illustration photo.

Along with the airport, the development of a seaport is also a priority. The Thai Binh Seaport will be constructed within the Thai Binh Economic Zone, capable of accommodating large vessels up to 50,000 tons (at sea) and 5,000 tons (inland) to meet the import and export needs, contributing to the formation and development of the zone. The focus on infrastructure development within the Thai Binh Economic Zone is entirely reasonable, given the continuous economic breakthroughs it has brought to the province.

From 1987 (when the first Foreign Investment Law was issued in Vietnam) to 2020, the province attracted nearly $800 million in FDI. However, from 2021 to the present, the province has attracted $4.1 billion in FDI, with nearly $3 billion in 2023 alone, placing Thai Binh in the top 5 nationwide in FDI attraction.

By 2030, Thai Binh aims to substantially complete the construction of economic zone infrastructure, striving to attract about $1.5 billion in investment annually, with industrial production value accounting for 60-70% of the province’s total industrial production value.
