In the early morning of September 16, residents of Dong Hoi city were surprised to find the beach covered in trash that had washed ashore, possibly from the recent floods. Among the debris were tree branches, reeds, household items such as shoes, clothes, hats, and a large number of boxes of traditional stroke prevention medicine, An Cung Ngưu Hoàng Hoàn.

Mr. Lai Minh Tu, head of the Bao Ninh beach rescue team, estimated that the amount of trash could be in the hundreds of tons, likely washed ashore from the historic floods in the northern provinces. Among the trash, many people, including Mr. Tu, found numerous boxes of An Cung Ngưu Hoàng Hoàn, a traditional medicine produced in Korea. Despite the outer packaging being damaged, the inner plastic boxes containing the medicine remained sealed and dry.

Mr. Tu himself collected a significant number of these medicine boxes, although he stated that he would not use them due to their unknown origin. He also mentioned that some people had collected hundreds of boxes, filling entire bags. The medicine boxes bear markings indicating a production date of 2023 and an expiration date of 2028. Mr. Tu provided a local newspaper, Tien Phong, with five boxes, requesting that they be tested for safety and inform the community if the medicine is still usable.

The Urban Environment Company dispatched a team of workers to clean up the trash along Bao Ninh beach. However, with the massive amount of debris, it will take a significant amount of time and effort to restore the beach to its previous beauty.

The workers expressed their hope for volunteer support to speed up the cleanup process and return the beach to its former pristine state.

On the evening of July 30th, as I strolled with a group of foreign friends through District 1’s 23-9 Park, along Pham Ngu Lao Street towards Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, an eyesore of litter and debris unfolded before us. Black plastic garbage bags piled up under trees, while discarded cardboard boxes and styrofoam containers littered the sidewalks and roadsides, some torn and tattered beyond recognition. The mess was further exacerbated by overflowing trash cans and indiscriminately scattered rubbish. To make matters worse, the adjacent shops and eateries had encroached onto the pavement, with vegetable stalls taking over the entire sidewalk, their runoff water creating a slippery mess on the road.
