The finance sector’s rapid adoption of AI is a strategic imperative for businesses globally and in Vietnam, given the digital economy’s exponential growth.
Recognizing this, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), in collaboration with the British Embassy, hosted “Catalysing Innovation with AI” on September 18 in Hanoi. The event was graced by the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Mr. Michael Mainelli, FCCA, and prominent figures from both organizations.
Key attendees from ACCA included Mr. Ren Varma, Head of Mainland Southeast Asia; Mr. To Quoc Hung, Country Manager of ACCA Vietnam; and Mr. Pham Quoc Hung, Vice Chair of ACCA Vietnam’s Member Advisory Committee (MAC) and Advisory Partner at Grant Thornton Vietnam, showcasing a strong commitment to AI integration.
Ms. Alex Smith, Consul General of the British Embassy in Ho Chi Minh City and Director for Trade, represented the embassy, emphasizing the importance of UK-Vietnam relations in the financial sector’s digital transformation.
The event also featured esteemed finance and technology experts as speakers, including Mr. Phan Vu Hoang, FCCA, Partner at Deloitte Vietnam; Mr. Ngo Hoang Ha, FCCA, Deputy Managing Director & CFO at Techcom Securities; Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong, FCCA, Consulting Director at FPT IS; and Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Lan Anh, FCCA, Chief Technology & Operations Officer at Standard Chartered Bank. Their insights attracted a significant number of ACCA members from accounting, auditing, finance, and technology fields, eager to explore AI’s potential.
Mr. Varma, in his opening address, highlighted the pivotal role of AI in accounting: “At ACCA, we embrace AI as a business tool, empowering accountants to save time and costs, thereby delivering sustainable value. AI’s rapid development is reshaping how businesses operate, so we’ve enhanced our training programs to equip accountants with AI skills and knowledge, underpinned by ethical foundations. By integrating AI, accountants can transcend repetitive tasks and elevate their strategic and creative contributions to the profession in the digital age.”
Lord Mayor Mainelli commended ACCA for its forward-thinking approach to AI adoption and underscored AI’s significance in finance and accounting. He acknowledged Vietnam’s impressive growth, outpacing many ASEAN countries, with UK-based entities like ACCA making significant contributions to the financial services sector and the broader economy.
Attendees engaged with leading experts from Deloitte Vietnam, Techcom Securities, FPT IS, and Standard Chartered Bank, delving into AI’s benefits, practical applications in Vietnam, and models that can harness AI for sustainable development. These discussions offered valuable insights into the potential of AI in the country’s financial landscape.
In his closing statement, Mr. To Quoc Hung expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all attendees, partners, ACCA members, speakers, and the Lord Mayor for their invaluable contributions. He asserted that AI presents more opportunities than challenges for Vietnamese businesses, significantly impacting their operations. While AI enables efficient data processing, analysis, and daily communication, Mr. Hung emphasized the irreplaceable role of accountants in ensuring transparency, accountability, and professional ethics in the AI era. He encouraged everyone to leverage ACCA’s network and AI research resources to propel their businesses forward and positively impact Vietnam and the world.
