The 5G Speed Test and “Flexing” Trend

A trend has emerged, originating from a reputable newspaper reporting that smartphone users in various provinces such as Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Binh Duong, Thai Binh, Nghe An, and Nam Dinh, have been able to access 5G networks, with some even claiming to have had access since late September despite the technology not yet being officially launched. This information sparked enthusiastic discussions and sharing among readers. Many Facebook accounts also confirmed the presence of 5G in multiple locations in the comments section of the article, stating: “It’s been in Hoan Kiem for a while now,” “I got it up at Ho Guom Lake,” and “I can catch 5G from every corner.” It is evident that the 5G network from Viettel, the country’s largest network provider, is becoming increasingly accessible across the country.

Viettel’s 5G network is creating a buzz among users, with many taking to social media to discuss and test the new technology.

On social media, user Đ. N.D shared a vibrant red flyer introducing Viettel’s 5G, asking “Is everyone ready?” The post garnered comments confirming the availability of Viettel’s 5G in different areas: “Binh Duong is full of their ads everywhere,” “Times Square has full bars,” and “Look at this 5G speed test, it’s pretty fast, bro.” Another user, Đào Đức Mạnh, couldn’t contain his excitement, asking, “For real? I’ve been waiting for this for so long.”

A well-known forum for tech enthusiasts also featured a popular thread titled “Using Viettel’s ‘Real’ 5G in Ho Chi Minh City,” with participants sharing information about coverage areas, 5G plans, and more. Member Bukkybois12 shared their excitement about the affordable plan, stating: “135,000 VND for 4GB/day is a great deal! In the EU, carriers charge 280,000 VND for 5GB/month, but calls and texts are free.”

XuyenViet2019, another member, commented: “I use eSim, and I don’t need to register. I can get 5G coverage anywhere in the district.” Midpham proudly displayed their 5G speed test results, saying: “I live right next to a tower, so I’ve been enjoying free 5G for almost half a year during their testing period.”

When Can Vietnamese Users Expect to Experience “Real” 5G?

Following Viettel’s introduction of 5G plans and vigorous preparatory activities for the official launch, the remaining two major network providers have also announced their trial programs for October and November, stating that they are “focused on completing the necessary tasks to commercialize 5G.” One of these providers shared that their trial program will run from October 13 to November 15, and users with 5G-capable phones will receive an invitation to experience the service when they enter areas with 5G coverage.

Viettel takes the lead in emitting enough stations to commercialize 5G as per their commitment.

According to regulations, telecom companies that participated in the 5G frequency auction are required to install a minimum of 3,000 BTS stations within two years of obtaining their license and officially provide 5G services no later than 12 months after receiving their permit. Viettel has met the condition to officially launch 5G by ensuring that they have emitted from at least 30% of the committed stations, making them the first among the three major providers to do so. Recent announcements from telecom companies about emitting and offering free 5G services are still considered trials and have not yet reached the commercialization stage.
