Australia’s Drive magazine recently published images believed to be of the upcoming Mazda CX-5 undergoing testing in California, USA, where Mazda North America is headquartered.

While the on-site images shared are not of the highest quality, they still provide a good glimpse of the vehicle’s overall design. Essentially, this prototype bears a resemblance to the current-generation Mazda CX-5.

However, the body appears to be longer towards the rear, akin to the Mazda CX-90 and Mazda3 hatchback. Additionally, the grille on the new model has been redesigned to be smaller, similar to the design of the Mazda CX-50.

This modification is expected to increase the overall length of the vehicle by approximately 110 mm, reaching 4,685 mm. This measurement is on par with the Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail, positioning the Mazda CX-5 as one of the longest SUVs in its segment.

According to Drive, the third-generation Mazda CX-5 is anticipated to be developed on the Small Platform, which is currently utilized for existing models such as the Mazda3, CX-30, and CX-50.

This platform will accommodate a new hybrid powertrain developed in-house by Mazda, instead of relying on Toyota’s technology as seen in the CX-50. Back in May 2024, the Japanese automaker confirmed that this hybrid system would be featured in the new CX-5. Moreover, the model will retain the CX-5 nameplate rather than switching to CX-40 as previously speculated.

Historically, Mazda has conducted prototype testing between one and three months before the official launch. Based on this trend, Drive predicts that the third-generation Mazda CX-5 could be unveiled around the middle of 2025.

Meanwhile, a CX-5 user forum in Germany speculates that the vehicle will be

introduced in Europe between September and November 2025. The powertrain options are expected to include mild hybrid, self-charging hybrid, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants.

Drive highlights that the CX-5 is Mazda’s best-selling model globally. In the Vietnamese market, the CX-5 dominated the C-SUV segment in 2024, with sales figures reaching 14,781 units.
