Hanoi police on August 14 issued a warning about a scam involving impersonation of prominent entrepreneurs to lure investments. Taking advantage of the reputation of well-known entrepreneurs, fake Facebook pages of these individuals have been running ads related to investment, business, and entrepreneurship, enticing people to participate with promises of high returns.

To gain trust, these fake pages also use blue verification ticks and share content about investment strategies and success stories of prominent entrepreneurs. Once someone shows interest, they are instructed to set up an account and are lured with the prospect of high profits. Initial small investments seem to yield significant returns, and withdrawals are easily facilitated through e-wallets, crypto wallets, or bank transfers.

However, once larger sums of money, ranging from hundreds of millions to billions of dong, are deposited, the scammers lock the victim’s investment account and demand additional payments (30-40% of the initial investment) to allow withdrawals. Eventually, when the victim can no longer afford to pay, the scammers block all communication, delete the fake Facebook page, and disappear with the victim’s money.

To protect yourself from such scams, the Hanoi Police’s Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention advises the following:

– Conduct thorough research and only invest through legitimate channels recognized by law. Refrain from investing in cryptocurrencies or other virtual assets through unverified websites.

– Be cautious of investment offers from strangers on social media platforms like Telegram, Zalo, or Facebook. Do not engage in financial transactions that promise abnormally high returns or present attractive investment opportunities without proper regulatory oversight.

– Examine the transparency of Facebook pages, even those with blue verification ticks. Scam pages often have a history of frequent name changes and multiple administrators.

– If you encounter any suspected fraudulent activity involving financial loss, report it directly to your nearest police station or send a written complaint via postal mail for official investigation and resolution.
