Emerging Urban Oasis: Sun Group’s Vision for Vung Tau’s 3km Offshore Island, Once Proposed as an Airport

Nestled just across the river from the bustling heart of Vũng Tàu, Gò Găng Island offers a serene escape into a world starkly different from its urban neighbor. Here, lush mangrove forests, sprawling salt fields, and scattered fishing rafts paint a picture of untouched tranquility, while the sparse homes of locals add to the island’s rustic charm.

Go Gang Island, located in Long Son Commune (Ho Chi Minh City), spans nearly 1,400 hectares. Despite being just 3 km from Vung Tau’s city center, the island offers a stark contrast with its marshlands, mangroves, salt fields, and sparse population.

Go Gang Island was once planned to host an airport, with a proposed investment of 9 trillion VND to replace Vung Tau Airport. The project envisioned helicopter operations, tourism, and oil exploration, aligning with a specialized airport model.

However, when Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province proposed including Go Gang Airport in the national airport system, the Ministry of Transport rejected the plan. The reason cited was that Go Gang lies within the airspace of Long Thanh Airport.

By June this year, just before the merger, the airport plan was officially abandoned. The land originally designated for the airport will now be redeveloped for urban and service purposes.

During a meeting with Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province leaders, Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of Sun Group, proposed developing a new urban area combined with tourism services on Go Gang Island. Notably, this proposal followed the groundbreaking of the 37 trillion VND Blanca City project in Vung Tau.

Currently, Truong Sa Street is the only road traversing Go Gang Island. While the road is well-constructed, it lacks lateral connections to enhance overall accessibility.

Truong Sa Street features two bridges connecting Go Gang Island to Vung Tau’s city center and Long Son Commune.

Marshlands with weak soil foundations dominate much of the island, posing challenges for urban development. However, these low-lying areas are ideal for creating retention ponds or buffer zones.

Some areas still retain mangrove forests, offering ecological diversity and natural erosion protection.

Go Gang Island has several salt fields, though most lie abandoned.

Along the Dinh River, which separates Go Gang Island from Vung Tau, hundreds of floating fish farms operated by locals can be found.

The island’s sparse population will facilitate land clearance for the proposed urban development project.
