The prestigious “Five Nines” license plate from Bac Ninh Province: 99A-999.99
According to Vietnam Auction Joint Stock Company (VPA) and the Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), the highlight of the November 11th auction was the license plate 99A-999.99.
During the bidding window from 11:00 to 11:26, this coveted “Five Nines” plate from Bac Ninh Province was officially secured at a final winning bid of 27,890,000,000 VND.
This figure surpasses the previous record of 21.8 billion VND set during its initial auction on August 12th, which was later forfeited.
The price surge during the re-auction of 99A-999.99 is particularly noteworthy, especially when compared to another highly sought-after plate, 30K-999.99. While 30K-999.99 initially fetched 75.275 billion VND, it was also forfeited, and during its September 2024 re-auction, it only reached 22.370 billion VND. The increased value of 99A-999.99 highlights the market’s varying demand and valuation for different license plates.

The November 11th auction also saw several other plates fetching high prices, indicating a new benchmark in license plate valuations:
- 65A-666.68 (Can Tho): Secured at 1.69 billion VND (2nd re-auction).
- 51B-799.99 (Ho Chi Minh City): Final bid of 1.52 billion VND.
- 30B-868.68 (Hanoi): Auctioned at 1.38 billion VND.
- 15K-988.88 (Hai Phong): Reached 1.2 billion VND.
Notably, the two-wheeler market also witnessed significant interest. The motorcycle license plate 50AB-999.99 (Ho Chi Minh City) was successfully auctioned for 1.05 billion VND.
This price reflects the growing demand for premium plates in the motorcycle segment, with other plates like 89AA-888.89 (over 413 million VND) and 35AA-888.88 (330 million VND) also attracting high bids.
The Traffic Police Department’s initiative to broadcast auctions live for the first time represents a significant step toward digital transformation, enhancing transparency and accessibility, especially following recent forfeiture incidents.
Since the auction program began on September 15, 2023, successful bidders have contributed over 5.2 trillion VND to the state budget.
Current regulations set the starting bid for car license plates at 40 million VND and motorcycle plates at 5 million VND. These base prices are adjusted every three years, with the next increase scheduled for January 1, 2025.
