As Vietnam’s electric two-wheeler market heats up, battery swapping stations are emerging as a game-changer. This innovative model allows riders to swap batteries in just 2 minutes, compared to the hours required for traditional charging, making it a highly convenient solution.
Battery swapping is rapidly becoming a strategic battleground, with industry giants investing heavily to expand their networks. VinFast has announced plans to deploy 50,000 stations nationwide by year-end, while Honda is rolling out swapping services at authorized dealerships to stay competitive.
Even before these major players entered the fray, Vietnamese startup Selex Motors had already embraced this model as a core part of its business strategy. According to the company’s website, by September 2025, Selex Motors recorded 1 million battery swaps across its network, a testament to its early commitment to this technology.
The company’s founder, Dr. Nguyễn Hữu Phước Nguyên, envisioned a future where battery swapping would revolutionize electric mobility. In 2018, he posed a simple yet profound question: “Why should charging take hours when refueling a vehicle takes mere minutes?” This insight led to the development of a system where users could swap batteries in minutes, eliminating the need for ownership and concerns over battery degradation.
Starting with a team of four, Selex Motors built its first wooden swapping station in just three months, using a repurposed desktop computer as the interface and driver’s licenses as temporary swap cards. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the team designed, simulated, and assembled the next generation of stations in a small apartment.

By 2021, the second and third generations of swapping stations were ready for real-world testing with delivery partners like Viettel Post and Lazada Logistics.
Selex Motors continues to innovate, developing electric vehicles, smart batteries, and an IoT management platform to create Vietnam’s first fully integrated electric motorcycle ecosystem.
