Central Vietnam’s Largest Sea-Crossing Bridge Completed but Faces Challenges
After nearly four years of construction, the Thuan An Sea-Crossing Bridge (part of the coastal road through Hue City) has officially completed its bridge section. However, this VND 2.4 trillion project remains inoperative due to incomplete connecting infrastructure.
According to the Hue City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board, as of November 30, the Thuan An Sea-Crossing Bridge in Thuan An Ward was fully constructed. As Central Vietnam’s largest sea-crossing bridge, it began construction in 2022 with funding from central and local budgets.
Despite the main bridge’s completion, both ends remain barricaded, prohibiting access. The State Acceptance Council, after an on-site inspection, declined to approve its opening. The reason cited was that Hoang Sa Road’s current width fails to meet the new route’s operational requirements.

In reality, the connecting road segments at both bridge ends (Northern Coastal Route 1A and Southern Coastal Route 1B) remain under construction, preventing the project’s full operation. Specifically, on Route 1B, the contractor has only received the cleared site from pier M2 to the Hoang Sa Road intersection. The construction unit aims to complete the remaining work by December 30, barring further complications.
The primary challenge lies in land clearance, particularly from the Hoang Sa Road intersection to National Highway 49. The investor anticipates the project’s completion may extend to Q2/2026, provided all cleared land is handed over in 2025.
To resolve resettlement bottlenecks, Hue City People’s Committee has tasked the Area 1 Project Management Unit with preparing a feasibility study adjustment report.
Central Vietnam’s Longest Sea-Crossing Bridge Megaproject
The coastal road and Thuan An Sea-Crossing Bridge project is a transformative, special-class transportation initiative in Hue. Upon completion, it will not only become Central Vietnam’s longest sea-crossing bridge but also play a pivotal role in boosting maritime economic development, harnessing lagoon potential, and driving regional growth.
Officially launched on March 26, 2022, with a total investment of approximately VND 2.4 trillion, this project marks a significant milestone in Hue’s transportation infrastructure modernization.

Spanning nearly 8 km, the project connects Tam Giang Bridge and the Thuan An Sea-Crossing Bridge, ending at the Highway 49A-49B intersection in Thuan An Ward. The 2.36 km Thuan An Sea-Crossing Bridge, Central Vietnam’s longest, features a 20m width and 4 lanes, meeting growing transportation demands.
This special transportation project includes a 218m Extradose main span designed for smooth vessel passage, while a 90m span accommodates boat mooring. The 40m-high pillars create a majestic, sturdy structure spanning Thuan An Estuary—a new symbol of connectivity and progress.
The project aims not only to build a coastal tourist route along Hue City’s shoreline but also to foster coastal urban development. This coastal road will stimulate socio-economic growth, tourism, and improve livelihoods in coastal communities, offering long-term benefits for Hue City.
Additionally, the project serves as a critical link in the planned national coastal road network, facilitating north-south cargo transport. It will enhance connectivity with key seaports, economic zones, and industrial parks along Central Vietnam’s coast, contributing to sustainable development and regional economic growth.
