On December 23, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police Department’s Economic Police Division announced a joint operation with the Traffic Police Department and Team 9 of the Market Management Department (Thanh Hoa Market Management Bureau). Upon inspection, the truck with license plate 76C-092.45, towing trailer 76R-006.30, driven by Nguyen Thanh Phuong (born 1981, residing in Van Canh, Gia Lai), was found carrying 271 crates of potato fish, totaling over 7 tons.

At the police station, Phuong initially stated he was hired by Anh Minh VN International Co., Ltd. (based in Lang Son) to transport 372 crates of iced potato fish (weighing 9.672 tons) imported from China through the Huu Nghi International Border Gate. The shipment was to be delivered to various provinces from Thanh Hoa to Binh Dinh, with a transportation fee of 20 million VND.

From the provided address, Phuong delivered 101 crates (over 2 tons) to Van Tien Dung (born 1983), Ngo Thi Hien (born 1977), and Le Van Long (born 1981), all residents of Sam Son ward.

While attempting further deliveries to other traders, Phuong was apprehended by authorities.

Inspections at the delivery sites revealed 181 crates (3.3 tons) of frozen potato fish, including 101 crates delivered by Phuong and 80 crates in storage.

Thanh Hoa Provincial Police reported that the imported potato fish from China was purchased at 37,000 VND/kg and sold to consumers at approximately 130,000 VND/kg. This price is significantly lower than domestically caught potato fish, which ranges from 250,000 VND/kg to 350,000 VND/kg depending on the season.

Tests conducted by the National Institute of Food Safety and Hygiene detected formaldehyde levels ranging from 90 to 105 mg/kg in the fish.

The case is currently under investigation by the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police Department’s Economic Police Division, in collaboration with relevant agencies, to determine appropriate legal action.
