Changan Introduces The New Hunter Electric Pickup

On March 1, 2024, Chinese brand Changan officially launched its Hunter electric pickup truck. First introduced at the Guangzhou Auto Show last year, the company claims that this is the world’s first extended-range electric pickup truck (EREV).

There are 8 versions for customers to choose from with prices ranging from 139,900 NDT to 216,900 NDT (equivalent to about 482-899 million VND).

In terms of size, the electric pickup truck includes a standard version and an extended version, priced at more than 1,000 RMB (equivalent to 3.4 million VND).

The standard version has dimensions of 5,380 × 1,930 × 1,885 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,180 mm, equivalent to a competitor, the Ford Ranger. With the longer version, the additional space is optimized for the cargo bed, making the total dimensions 5,630 × 1,930 × 1,885 mm, with a wheelbase of 3,430 mm.

In terms of appearance, this pickup truck has a fairly common design with two doors and no standout details. A thick layer of material surrounds the lower part of the vehicle to protect it from scratches.

The cargo bed is covered with scratch and corrosion-resistant material. Additionally, the Hunter also has a standard power outlet in the cargo bed to provide power to devices using the truck, up to 3.3 kW. However, the cargo capacity of the truck is modest, at 495 kg.

Another useful feature of the truck is the integrated fold-down ladder at the rear, which helps users to easily ascend and descend and transport items. The sides of the passenger compartment also have steps.

The approach angle of the Hunter is 29 degrees, while the departure angle is 27 degrees. The vehicle has a relatively large ground clearance, promising impressive off-road capability.

Inside the truck, it features a modern interior with a dual-screen system – a popular design trend in many current models with a 7.5-inch display behind the steering wheel and a 12-inch entertainment screen.

Features vary by version and include cruise control, AutoNavi navigation maps, adjustable angle headlights, automatic rain-sensing wipers, voice control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, LCD instrument cluster, 40W wireless phone charging, leather seats with heating function, air conditioning system with rear vents, etc.

In terms of power, the single-motor versions use a 130 kW rear-mounted electric motor, while the all-wheel-drive versions will have an additional 70 kW front-mounted electric motor.

All versions use the same 31.18 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. This capacity is sufficient for a pure electric range of up to 180 km. The total range of the vehicle is up to 1,031 km.

In addition to the electric motor, the Changan Hunter also uses a JL486ZQ6 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine that can deliver a maximum output of 140 kW. However, as this is an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), this engine only works as a generator.
